smurfs are weird little things

A version of the Smurfs told for the most part through art or short ficlets by tumblr user Bluebluebluewoods, centering around the idea that smurfs are just weird little magical frat people doing they best.

What is a Smurf?[]

Smurfs are a small species of fae, closer to teacup goblins or miniature elves than humans.

They can be most easily identified by their long, white furred digitigrade legs, which they use to bound around their chosen forests, their large and expressive ears, and the distinct blues of their skin. In addition to these features, they also have slit, catlike pupils, and small tails. These fae prefer to walk upright, but have been known to swap to all fours when additional speed is needed. Be careful when handling these fae, as while their claws are often too short to cause significant damage, their teeth are quite sharp, and their bite has been known to cause allergic reactions in humans.

Are they dangerous?[]

In short: yes. While many smurfs are accepting of humans, they are still at heart fae, and their morals and thoughts are not those of humanoid species. While most find direct action against a human distasteful, once they form a grudge smurfs do not forget it- a dangerous trait in a species to live so long.

Due to their immunity to several botanicals poisonous to humans, skin to skin contact may pass off these toxins. If they have consumed any of these plants, they may also pass along these toxins in a bite, and while a singular smurf may not be able to overtake a human on their own they usually travel in large packs, calling for reinforcements. This can quickly become overwhelming.

However, if proper caution is exercised the friendship between a human and a village of smurfs can lead to great mutual benefit. The current recommended procedure is to set honey and cream in a thin, shallow dish in a secure place at the location of a confirmed smurf sighting. This should, if the balance of honey to cream is correct, ensure positive communication between the species.

Magical Abilities[]

While all smurfs have large reserves of magic, only certain smurfs are actually able to access this deliberately on short notice. Uses of minor, instinctual magic is common, such as the magic transfer between one expectant parent to the carrier of the new smurfling, or the rapid plant growth that results in their symbiotic relationships with a particular villages symbol.

Those smurfs who are able to access their magic are known as "Witches", and are not to be taken lightly. Luckily, there is usually only one witch per village, if that, so if you can remove them from their group, or successfully win their acceptance, you should be able to safely observe the remainder.

Communication[]

The natural language of a smurf is rich and varied, but unfortunately cannot be fully understood by most humans. While they can learn to speak in human tongues, their native tongue is heavily based on magical communication, often coming across to the human ear as a strange mixture of whatever language the listener is most familiar with, and the repeated word "Smurf". Scholars across many species have attempted to understand just how this communication works, but have been unsuccessful until now.

Overarching plot[]

there is none. its just weird little creatures in the woods

Differences from canon[]

As listed above, these smurfs are a lot less "human but blue" than canon. They do not follow a strict gender binary, or even a sex binary. Gender is seen as more of a fun optional choice, rather than a strict need. They also are not divided by gender per village, but by the actual type of plant they primarily live within.

Also, papa doesn't like to leave the village because he is Very highly wanted for crimes, but thats fine.
