The Butterverse series is an alternative universe created by Butterfrogmantis (named after her pseudonym) based on The Smurfs media, which includes depictions of the ongoing lives of The Smurfs characters, including both canonical and fan-made ocs. This AU includes characters from the original comics and 1980's series, the 2011 & 2017 live action films, and new characters from The Lost Village and New Touch Of Blue TV series.
Main Overview[]
The Butterverse focuses on multiple characters that live both in and outside of Smurf village, exploring their relationships, adventures, backgrounds and lives in general. This includes Smurfs marrying or having stork deliveries, which result in a new generation of Smurfs, bringing in new characters into the series.
There are currently 2 known Smurf villages, originally segregated by sex due to conflict that happened 3 eras ago between the elderly and now deceased Papa and Mama Smurf. As of now, the village and grove are still mostly living separately, although mixing between them is somewhat common, especially when male/female couples occur. Same-sex Smurf couples are still more common than heterosexual ones, as they generally find it easier to exist within the same area to each other, and few are willing to change residence permanently, although there are exceptions to this.
In Smurf Village, there is an individual (normally male) Smurf for tasks, and their names often correlate to their special skill or trade. In Smurfy Grove, the Smurfs work communally as teams to complete essential tasks such as farming, cooking, mending and scouting, and most are named after elements of nature or music. New Smurfs born in either village regardless of gender are often named according to the custom.
The Origins Of Smurfs[]
Smurfs evolved from moon spirits - specifically a big portion of ones that came to earth to settle. Of course, Moon Spirits are bright and glowy and stand out in a dark forest, so over the years their pale silver fur became duller and bluer and more like skin since it's warmer on earth than the moon. Tails shrunk, ears changed, faces changed and voila. They became Smurfs. Their language evolved from 'Spirit' to become 'Smurf' over the years as their name got translated and confused between other magical fae, like a game of telephone.
Smurfs more or less lived the same way any other fae does for tens of thousands of years - if not millions. Colonies spread out, some evolved even further (Smurfataurs are a cousin species of which one known remains) and they reproduced naturally for some time. To this day there's still potentially many colonies out there but it's unlikely the specific Belgian Smurfs will ever meet them since they've been so isolated - this was due a civil war that happened between the Great Grandpa and Great Grandma Smurf.
The two ex leaders of the village had grown to dislike each other over their centuries of living. They craved different values for the Smurf village. The male ex-leader wanted to stick right where they were, where they had been for thousands of years. The female ex-leader believed this was not sustainable, and suggested they move further into the enchanted forest. The current Papa and Mama Smurf (now known as Grandpa and Nanny) were on a quest together to find the ingredients for the long life stone, and would inevitably miss the fall out of what happened. The arguments between the great grandpa and great grandma Smurfs grew worse, until a final breakdown would split the village completely. Half stayed with Great Grandpa and half left with Great Grandma. In order to keep the village population going, Great Grandpa, a powerful magician - called upon their ancient ancestors - the moon spirits, so that they may provide Smurflings for future generations via the form of storks. Then the virus hit. A terrible, unknown magical disease that threatened the village. Great Grandpa left the youngest Smurfling in the care of a wizard named Paladore and returned to the village, but alas, no cure was found in time.
Until recently, they were then forbidden from crossing boundaries into the forbidden forest.
Years later when a young Smurf returned to the village, the moon spirits began sending down Smurflings via stork mail, using the essence of the deceased smurfs (all fae have some kind of essence) so that the village, and the grove may have a new generation. It's unknown why exactly they did all male and all female village, maybe they thought a combined would cause another civil war? Whatever the case these two specific villages are reunited again and the moon spirits no longer divide like that, male grovers and female villagers are now pretty common for next gen.
This Smurfs are kind of weird because they decided to keep the stork method (it's so much easier after all) but they can potentially still hybridise.
Variations From Canon Biology[]
Whilst much of the content of the series remains faithful to the canon appearances of Smurfs up to a point, there are a couple of changes that affect the basic overview of this series;
- Unlike the canon Smurfs, the Butterverse Smurfs can and do vary in terms of height and appearance, including some characters having freckles or scars where they would not in canon. The shade of blue that makes up their skin is consistent between all Smurfs, however.
- Some characters that may not be related to each other in canon media may be relatives in this AU.
- Baby Smurfs brought by stork are genetically related to at least two pre-existing Smurfs.
- Due to the aforementioned gender divide, Smurf pregnancies are no longer viable as they once were, although physical differences between male and female Smurfs still exist (see below) The actual reproduction of the species is instead handled by Stork deliveries on blue moons if two Smurf parents (regardless of genders) wish to raise one. Since the reunion of the two villages, Smurfs with genders that fall outside of the binary cis male-female ratio have become slightly more commonplace and are not discriminated against by their peers.
Dimorphism Of Smurfs[]
On average, male and female Smurfs are of the same height and weight. Both male and female Smurfs are capable of building up the same amount of muscle if so desired, and there's no difference between their recommended digestive intake. There are still variations between them, however.
- Female Smurfs do not possess mammaries, as baby Smurfs are capable of digesting from other animal's milk or eating solids much earlier than other species. Since this is a de-evolved trait of the species, they may still have a slight curve to the hips or chest, but this is simply a body type, and the chests otherwise appear the same as males. Many will still chose to wear shirts or dresses as tradition.
- Generally, Males do not grow hair until they are middle aged. There are rare exceptions to this rule of male Smurfs being born with hair as a genetic condition. This does not affect the male in question in any negative way, it's simply an anomaly. Female Smurfs are normally born with some hair, and a lack of would be even rarer than the male counter condition. Smurfs that have transitioned from one gender to another may chose to cut or keep hair, or wear a wig, but this is simply personal preference.

Time Line[]
Whilst there are no official dates for this AU, as the Butterverse extends into the next generation of Smurfs and these characters growing up, the timeline is extended far beyond canonical sources. Stories and artwork will jump between the ages of the Smurfs depending on the situation or context being explored. In general, as most of the Smurfs had their Smurflings in their 200's, the oldest the canon characters will ever be is in the mid 300's, but this can also be pushed up to the late 400's if the youngest next gens are presented as older in an event. Most of the next generation Smurfs are just slightly younger than the canon Smurfs were supposed to be, and are the equivalent of teenagers or young adults. The younger next gens are Smurflings or a toddler.
Butterverse Stories[]
The majority of the Butterverse events have been explored through artwork, however the author has published a couple of stories to other sites which explore certain characters relationships in depth. These stories are written as one shots, and the titles include;

Butterverse General Trivia[]
- Most Smurfs are Bisexual in this au, with a couple of prominent character's orientations varying. This makes it easier for Smurfs to find partners since they'd otherwise have been restricted with finding significant others within a limited space and before the Grove/Villages discovered each other.
- The location of the Smurfs is assumed to be Belgium, despite the fact the majority of the characters speak with American or other localised European accents.
- In this au, canon characters can have children via submitting a 'stork' application. If they are deemed acceptable parents, the next blue moon will bring them a baby. It's not exactly clear how or where the babies themselves come from, although it's speculated it may have something to do with Harold, the man on the moon.
