Smurfs Fanon Wiki

Don Smurfo is a Smurf character, and a major protagonist of the Butterverse

History[]

Don Smurfo is a fictional storybook character from a series of novels written centuries before the current Smurf generation existed. Having been initially freed from his book twice and returning to them, he eventually decides he’d rather make new stories in the real village than rehash his old books. He was brought out again on request, having left a clue inside one of his own books, and now currently resides in the Smurf village.

Personality[]

Don is an overconfident and rather flamboyant character, often masquerading his true fear of being inept outside of his storybooks. He’s also rather flirtatious, often with extravagant and over the top displays of chivalry. He can often be fanciful, putting himself and others in danger without realising or meaning to. However, his charm and optimism make him a popular character in the village, especially with younger Smurflings.

Appearance[]

Don is slightly taller than average for a Smurf, and is in peak physical condition. Due to technically being a living painting, his physique and appearance do not really change much regardless of his lifestyle. He wears a dark purple cape and musketeer hat with a large red feather, a lighter purple mask over his eyes and a red belt over white leggings. Notably, he has a black Dali-esque moustache. Although usually covered by his cape, he has several scars on his back from adventures in his books. Don speaks with an Italian accent.

Role In The Village[]

Don is the self-appointed village hero. In reality, he’s mostly a glorified baby sitter for the younger Smurfs, and an odd job man when the others need assistance. Don will often be found reading out his old books to the village children or giving them rides on his golden eagle Arnoldo. Don is also a fencing instructor, and is very proficient with a rapier sword.

Relationships[]

Conte Smurfo[]

As the Don Smurfo storybooks were written a long time before the current village, Don was originally depicted as having a father by the name of Conte Smurfo, his mother having passed away during his infancy. This original book was lost to time and even Don himself, until Papa Smurf discovered it amongst a pile of forgotten cases. During the story, as they discovered, a group of bandits lay waste to Don’s hometown, and murdered Conte for his possessions, which would kick-start the Don Smurfo storybooks and adventures into motion.

Although Don is aware that his father, like him, is a fictional character, he still feels a pining in his heart for the relationship he feels is genuine, even if it was lost from his own memory before they discovered the missing books.

Elena[]

“The Road To El Smurfado” was one of the finalized Don Smurfo books, being one of the first in the complete series. This would follow on from the origin story; however the original context had been lost alongside the unpublished books about his childhood. Along the journey, he would rescue a female Smurf by the name of Señorita Smurfella (Elena to her friends) who quickly proved to be a valuable ally and somewhat of a love interest in the series.

Later, during another accidental potion spilling whilst cleaning up Papa’s lab, Elena too would be revived from the book, originally assuming herself to be in a relationship with Don, although he’d spent enough time out of his book to have formed an entirely new life. Although she was upset at first, Elena eventually came around to the strange new place she found herself in, and she and Don remain as friends.

Malegarg and Zraela[]

These two are the main villains of his books, and often the cause for much of the stories' conflicts. Don doesn't tend to think about them much anymore though, and is simply glad they remain inside the stories.

Somebody Smurf[]

Somebody Smurf is Don Smurfo’s romantic interest, later husband, and best friend.

Following his new found freedom in the real world, Don Smurf is determined to prove himself a real Smurf in the eyes of the village leader, and accepts a mission to trek up Mount Smurf for Papa to collect some rare herbs for a new experiment. He’s told that he may want to take a companion, and when asking around the village for ‘mission companions’ is told of a Smurf who’s known for taking certain ‘missions’ for Papa Smurf. This might have been a slight misunderstanding between Don and the others, as the Smurf he’s directed to is Somebody Smurf, the village secret agent. Who’s known more for undercover missions than trekking up mountains, but Don is determined to befriend the reclusive Smurf never the less, and coerces him into joining him up the mountain.

The two encounter trials, mostly due to Don Smurfo's unwavering over-confidence, but eventually return victorious albeit slightly bruised. Somebody wants no more to do with the flamboyant Italian, and tries to distance himself. Don, on the other hand, has chosen Somebody as his new favourite guy, and attempts to constantly try and intervene on his missions, often ruining them. This comes to a head when Somebody eventually snaps, yelling at Don to leave him alone. Heartbroken, Don decides it may be best for him to return once more to his books, feeling as though he can’t fit in the village. Just before he is able to take the return potion, Somebody shows back up, admitting he was feeling guilty about yelling and offering to give Don another chance at a friendship, admitting Don Smurfo is one of the few Smurfs that ever noticed him as more than a nobody.

During the course of their relationship, Don learns of Somebody’s past and origin’s with Vanity’s silver mirror, and the two realise they have more in common than they first thought, despite their opposing personalities. Whilst they occasionally seem to have a rocky dating life due to arguments that occur over their personality flaws, the truth is they can’t really live without each other. Like Smurfette, they feel bound by their origins and want to break their own stories, feeling as though none of the other Smurfs will ever comprehend their stories or thoughts on the matter. If Somebody is ever in trouble, Don will put himself into immediate danger to save him, and has done so on more than one occasion. Although he can be rather flirtatious, Don is deeply loyal to his special ‘signore’ and doesn’t attempt to hide this from the others, often boasting proudly about it.

Don proposed during the winter, in a little clearing away from the village, contradicting his usual need to be the centre of attention for a quiet, honest moment.

Quixotic Smurf[]

Since Don is a fictional character brought to life, he doesn’t really have any DNA to speak of, and as a result, is technically ‘infertile’ by Smurf standards that require two parents DNA files, kept on the moon, in order to deliver a Smurfling. Originally, Don and Somebody were resigned to the probability they would never be parents, apart from occasionally looking after Snappy Smurfling, however this was not the case.

An orphaned baby Smurfling from the grove was brought to the attention of the couple whilst SmurfWillow was looking for a home placement after the baby’s parents were captured (and presumably turned to gold) by an unknown wizard. The two were granted the baby Smurfling to raise, and became her adoptive fathers, letting her know of her true heritage from an early age.

Despite lacking a biological connection to him, Quixotic grew up to be like Don in many ways, admiring him and even dyeing her hair black from the time she was a young teenager in order to physically resemble the Italian hero more closely. Don has always considered himself to be the laid back, fun father, although he knows when to keep his daughter out of trouble. He has instructed her in the art of swordplay, and the two will occasionally spar to keep each other’s skills up.

Painter Smurf[]

Painter Smurf is Don Smurfo’s platonic best friend, although they aren’t necessarily good influences on each other. In fact, a common pastime has been known for the two of them to drink a little more Smurfberry wine than they perhaps should, which can sometimes lead to humorous situations that are generally in good fun despite the embarrassment they may cause. This doesn’t stop them repeating the cycle every once in a while though. Never the less, they have a strong bond and enjoy talking about their different cultures or artistic tastes when sober enough to have a normal conversation.

Trivia[]

  • Don has a slightly unhealthy obsession with Italian food, especially pasta, which would probably be bad for him except for the fact his body type does not change, which makes certain peers jealous
  • It’s currently unknown whether Don is affected by the long life stone or aging in general, since he’s neither a real Smurf nor one created from clay
  • Don plays a mandolin
  • His golden eagle also lives outside of the storybooks, and Don has explicitly trained him not to hunt Somebody’s pet, a Pine Marten named Bella
  • Don Smurfo is the author’s personal favourite character
