Edgar is an animal character from the cartoon show. His Wiki page is located here. He also exists in The Smurfs: Light and Dark.

Background Information

Edgar is a European vulture whose general nature seems reserved, skeptical, and finicky. He is usually at rest and only shows his keen senses and strength when hunting, unless otherwise commanded by his caretaker.

Relationship with Hogatha

Since he was a chick, he has been raised by Hogatha and lives primarily on a pedestal in her castle. She has always provided enough food, shelter, and praise to keep him content and healthy, but whenever she is unhappy or feels he is being too rambunctious, she will have him chained by the neck to the wall behind his pedestal.

Generally, he does not seem to care for Hogatha's various pursuits of beauty, fortune, or love, but will assist her if commanded. Usually he is her form of transportation since she is small enough to carry on his back, and he answers her bird calls if separated for too long. She also feeds him various meats (bovine, rodent, etc.) that she enchants with an age-slowing spell, so he is much older than any natural-living vulture.

Appearance

Edgar is a three-foot-tall red-headed vulture with a yellow, black-tipped beak, standard black eyes with off-white eyes, a white bluff, charcoal grey feathers, and yellow-orange feet with long black talons. His wingspan is approximately eight feet long.

Voice Actor(s)

It is assumed that he was originally voiced by Frank Welker.

Trivia

  • In the cartoon show, he was named Harold, James, or Edgar during different episodes, which was likely continuity error during production. However, it is possible that Hogatha could have two pet vultures of whom she switches out at times.
  • He is based on the red-headed vulture from the Old World of Southeast Asia and Indian Subcontinents.
