A fairy is a small humanoid being with long or short wings, either around the same size as a Smurf or taller. Fairies are generally peaceful and friendly, but they are fierce fighters when they are called upon to deal with thieves and intruders in their realm. They can use magic for many tasks: for example, to put spores on the flowers or to create colors for the world, making them very useful. Some fairies may have need for gold to build furniture.

Fairies mostly appear in the cartoon show, with the first ones the Smurfs meet being Prince Garth and his mother Queen Lianon. All the Smurfs (except Papa Smurf) thought fairies were real trouble makers and bring bad luck. However, after the events that took place in "All's Smurfy That Ends Smurfy," the fairies and the Smurfs live in peace and harmony as friends.
Besides the fairies in that episode, there were also Queen Fauna and her child Prince Fenwick, who were being pursued by the evil "fallen fairy" Falan because of the magic rattle the infant possessed.
There was also Gunilda the good fairy, who does good deeds regarding feeding the needy and the hungry, and the Tooth Fairy who helps infants who were just starting to grow teeth as well as young children who were losing their baby teeth in order to grow adult teeth.
In "A Hug For Grouchy," there is a nameless fairy that Chlorhydris casts a spell on to control her. She then places her in charge of using her Ice Wand to ride every living creature of all emotions. Luckily, this fairy was freed by Grouchy giving her a big, warm hug while she was distracted by being unable to cast the spell on Baby Smurf.
