Farmer Smurf is a Smurf character, and one of the main protagonists in the Butterverse.
History[]
Farmer Smurf is responsible for growing the crops that the village eat. He is one the Smurfs of the current generation, having limited knowledge on his ancestors that were wiped out before. He currently resides in Smurf Village.
Personality[]
Farmer is mild mannered and gentle Smurf, although he does possess a bit of a hot temper at times. This is much rarer though, as he can usually be relied on to be one of the most patient and caring Smurfs of them all, even when he’s enjoying the company of his plants. He dislikes attachment to material possessions, and places value on accomplishments, such as his prize carrots.
Farmer does struggle with some insecurity surrounding his status in the village, which would seem a little strange to most Smurfs since he has an important job. He often feels he’s not good enough for his peers, or that he’s too much of a simple country bumpkin, despite the fact his fellow Smurfs have never expressed these thoughts. It’s unknown exactly why Farmer thinks this, but it may simply be a self-esteem issue.
Appearance[]
Farmer is the tallest Smurf in the village, with a rather strong body type from his manual labour. He wears wooden shoes, and set of dark green overalls with a patch he sewed himself onto the right knee. He also wears a straw hat over the top of his standard white hat, and can usually be seen carrying some sort of farming equipment. Farmer is covered in freckles from head to toe, with only his stomach (which is rarely seen) lacking them.
Role In The Village[]
Farmer is the sole cultivator of the vegetables used by the cooks of Smurf village. He’s often one of the first to wake up in the village as such, and has a hut that’s closer to the fields than the other mushroom houses. He also oversees some domesticated Smurfberry and Sarsaparilla plants in his fields, although these also tend to grow in the wild.
Relationships[]
Papa Smurf[]
Farmer often trusts the village leader to help with his problems, and reports back to him whenever there are changes in the growth or development of plants. He also often asks Papa for help regarding issues related to farming such as weather or pests.
Smurfette[]
Farmer Smurf thought himself to be in love with Smurfette for a while, but after accepting that she didn’t want to get married at the time, realised he was content with being her friend. Although he wonders what could have been, he still enjoys her company to talk about flowers, which are one of his favourite plants.
The Snails[]
Farmer raises his own species of milk snail that he got from SmurfBuddleia in the grove. These snails provide milk for the village, and Farmer treats them as family.
Gourdy[]
Goudy is Farmer’s genie, and the two have a slightly complicated dynamic. Farmer does generally see Gourdy as a friend, but he can get annoyed with him and at times wishes he never found the gourd (but not out loud!). He does genuinely care about his genie though, and would go out of his way to protect him from trouble if it occurred. Still, he does sometimes wish the little guy would stop bugging him.
Tailor Smurf[]
Tailor Smurf is Farmer’s husband, and he’s devoted to him. Farmer was initially aware of Tailor’s frustration with him and his dirtied work clothes, although he could see the Smurf was trying to be polite. One night during a heavy storm, Farmer ran out of blankets to warm up the newly hatched snails and turned to Tailor in desperation since his spares were with Laundry Smurf. Tailor agreed and Farmer promised to take him on a picnic to make up for the inconvenience of it all. When the two started becoming friends, Farmer’s admiration for Tailor and his craft grew, although he kept his feelings hidden, as he was worried about a repeat Smurfette incident. Most of the village could see the chemistry between them at this point, and Gourdy had even read his master’s diary confessing as much.
Following a formal event that Gourdy accidentally ruined at Princess Periwinkle’s ball, Farmer was eventually kissed by Tailor, confirming their mutual attraction. Some years later, Farmer proposed in the quiet of his own Smurf hut after one of the annual fashion shows, celebrating the end of another successful year for the two of them.
Diligent Smurf[]
Diligent Smurf is Farmer’s son, and the two have a good relationship. Farmer didn’t do as much of the childcare during the early years as he would have liked, but this was due to him having to work the fields most days, and he was still able to come home in the evenings and take over duties, which he loved. When Diligent was a little older, Farmer would take him out in the fields with him sometimes and allow him to help scatter seeds or harvest the crop yield. Diligent will still often assist Farmer during busy times of the year, even if he has work elsewhere. As a Smurfling, Farmer taught his son to play a banjo, and the two will sometimes still sing songs together.
Sower Smurf[]
Sower is Farmer's daughter, and the two are close. Unlike Diligent, who was delivered during the summer months and looked after mostly by Tailor, Sower was a winter delivery and as the crops weren't growing during those months, Farmer was more than happy to take on the front of the responsbilty of looking after her for the first few months till the soil thawed. This probably helped cement their strong bond from an early age, as Sower still loves to hang around the fields and help out where she can. She and Farmer have a very strong sense of family, and she knows she can run to him for emotional issues just as much.
Chef Smurf[]
Farmer is Chef's friend and responsible for the crops Chef uses in his meals, although they hang out outside of work as well. Farmer is a very patient Smurf which tends to contrast to Chef's erratic temper, but Farmer is confident enough to hold his own.
Trivia[]
- Farmer owns two pets, a male praying mantis called Banjo that helps keep his crops pest free, and a female firefly called Glimmer that he once rescued from an abandoned spider web.
- Farmer sometimes sews his own clothes back up (hence the mismatched patch) which seems ironic considering he’s married to the village tailor. He has since admitted this was because he used to be too shy to enter the shop
- Farmer is a hopeless romantic, and enjoys spending some of the time he isn’t farming reading a romance novel quietly to himself.
- Gourdy never actually undid the super strength spell. Farmer seems not to have noticed, but in truth he still has incredible strength but it’s only ever apparent if he uses a lot of force, which is a rare occasion unless he's ploughing fields
