Gargamel's castle (also called Gargamel's hovel or Gargamel's house) is the center location of Gargamel's activities.
Mainstream Smurfs Media
It is a rundown house made of stone and thatching where the evil wizard, his cat, and his apprentice Scruple reside, and where Gargamel develops his plans and formulas that he uses against the Smurfs. It is generally located on the outer edge of the Smurf Forest next to a murky muck pond, which was used at one time as the dumping grounds for Gargamel's failed formulas. In the comic books, the muck pond doesn't appear. In Sony Pictures' live-action The Smurfs film series and the animated features The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol and The Smurfs: The Legend Of Smurfy Hollow, Gargamel's castle appears near the edge of a cliff. And in Smurfs: The Lost Village, it appears on an island of rock with only a bridge connecting to it.
The castle contains a laboratory, a library, a kitchen, a bedchamber, and a basement in which the Great Book Of Spells is located.
Empath: The Luckiest Smurf stories
In the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series, the castle was previously owned by Gargamel's father, who had passed it on to his son at the time of his death. In the novel, when Gargamel, Azrael, and Scruple were driven out of the Smurf Forest for good, the Great Book Of Spells caused Gargamel's castle to vanish completely. In the story "Empath's Wedding", Gargamel's castle was recreated as an Imaginarium fantasy setting.
The Mirror Universe version of Gargamel's castle is much nicer looking in comparison to its normal universe counterpart.
LD Stories
Within The Smurfs: Light and Dark, this location is a main stead. Starting relatively from where the cartoon show left off, it is introduced in Season 1 as the home of Gargamel, his cat Azrael, and his apprentice Scruple.
In Season 2, following the conclusion of The Reluctant Dark Knight, Johan becomes an occupant within this hovel as Gargamel's new apprentice alongside Scruple. He lives there for as long as he is under Gargamel's wicked Heart of Darkness spell.
Smurfs: The Thomas & Friends Series
In the second story, the original Steam Team went to Gargamel's hovel to confront him and rescue the captive Smurfs.
Notes
- The reference to this location being a castle comes from Smurf: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle, although it is commonly referred to as a hovel or a house.
- In the Season 1 cartoon series episode, "The Magical Meanie," Gargamel has a book in his collection that is stated to have been his great grandfather's Book of Genies. He uses it to seek out the Genie Meanie with the magic words needed to obtain three wishes from the genie.
