Handy is a Smurf character and one of the main protagonists of the Butterverse.

History[]

Handy Smurf is the handyman and part time inventor of Smurf Village. Along with the rest of his peers, he was looked after by Papa Smurf since the previous generation was wiped out. Although he never met him, Handy is aware that he’s a descendant of the esteemed technological prodigy Inventor Smurf, who he’s read about in what few records survived the generational gap. He hopes to one day live up to his grandfather’s skills. He currently resides in the village.

Personality[]

Handy is an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual. Forever tinkering with machines and drawing up new blueprints, he can often be found in his workshop over his desk during the day, and sometimes working on inventions by night. He’s usually pretty laid back, but there are times when some things (and occasionally someone, in the case of Brainy) can irritate and bring out a slightly more aggressive side to him. Luckily, if he’s ever genuinely hurtful to his friends, he’ll always come around and apologise in the end. Handy has been known to have a rather competitive streak in him, which can occasionally led to situations where he puts himself in danger. Fortunately, he’s usually resourceful enough to escape unscathed.

Appearance[]

Handy is slightly taller than the average Smurf, and somewhat pear shaped for a Smurf. He is, however, a lot stronger than he appears (his strength almost rivalling that of Hefty, the village strongman.) He wears a set of dark blue overalls, a pencil tucked behind one ear (usually his left) and his hat has a visor.

Role In The Village[]

Handy is mostly responsible for the repair and building work that goes on around the village. This includes everything from the mushroom houses to the dam, and fixing other Smurfs items when they break. If he’s not repairing objects, there’s a good chance he’ll be inventing them instead. Handy has developed a lot of technology that’s been slightly ahead of his time, he just doesn’t realise how truly advanced some of it is.

Relationships[]

Papa Smurf[]

Like all Smurfs, Handy looks up to the village leader as a source of wisdom and guidance, akin to a teacher of sorts. He will often to him with questions about his projects, or simply to ask for an opinion.

Clockwork Smurfs[]

Handy is the creator of both Clockwork and Clockwork Smurfette, and feels somewhat fatherly towards them for this reason. He rarely sees the two as they reside in King Gerard’s castle, but he’s always happy to see them when they visit for a tune up, or simply to see him again.

Clockwork Handy[]

A gargamellian creation made from a duplicated essence of Handy, the two have been bitter rivals since Handy inadvertedly reset his programming by throwing the robot from a cliff. One on one, they're evenly matched, and so there is never a clear winner to a fight, and CH often comes back to try again since he has a personal score to settle with the inventor.

Hefty Smurf[]

Hefty Smurf is Handy’s best friend, although they’ve been known to have their spats in the past. Most of their arguments stem from Hefty’s preference for Smurfpower vs Handy’s machinery, but it has to be said they’re each other’s rock throughout difficult times, and Handy knows the two of them can reconcile any differences that occur. The two are fond of playing sports together, and it’s one of the things they can genuinely bond over.

Marina The Mermaid[]

Handy’s first true love was Marina The Mermaid. He remained faithful to her for almost a century, despite their species difference and the distance. He’d frequently attempt to find new inventions to allow him underwater, but ultimately none of his projects ever proved sustainable. Although he considered the possibility of magical transformation, he realised that the Smurf Village needed him more, and so never chose to attempt anything more than machinery. In between his failed projects, the two would meet at Smurf beach, often at night, just to enjoy each other’s company.

As the years passed, Handy began to notice signs of the lifespan difference between them. Whilst Handy remained relatively young for a Smurf, Marina was quickly becoming middle aged for a mermaid, and the pressure of becoming queen was getting closer. One day, she confessed that her father had passed, leaving her with the crown of Atlantica but unwed. As the queen, she now had a responsibility to her kingdom, and feared the merfolk would never be able to accept Handy. Regretfully, the two parted ways at last. Handy felt as though he’d wasted the last century of his life over this, and then felt guilty over those feelings, reminding himself that his love for Marina was real. Unfortunately, the separation led Handy into a short period of depression, wherein he lost the motivation to create for a while, and spent days locked in his house instead of joining the other Smurfs.

Clumsy Smurf[]

Handy and Clumsy have been good friends since Smurfling hood, and in spite of Clumsy’ tendency to break or uproot his projects, Handy has always been willing to allow him to assist in whatever projects around the village.

During his period of recovery from his heartbreak, Handy and Clumsy began to bond over their now shared duties, and over time Handy managed to get his friend to open up to him about his own separation, which Handy was able to do as well, leading to a mutual understanding and deeper connection. Around this time, Handy began to come to terms with the realisation he’d somewhat fallen for his old friend, but sensed the pain Clumsy still felt and kept quiet about it, until he realised Clumsy’s sons were actively trying to push them together. Handy admitted his feelings, and the two began dating. Years later, Handy proposed at a firework display, although this took place during the autumn and he had no ring at the time. They married in spring, and Handy officially adopted his step-sons, having gotten their mother’s blessing to do so.

Crash & Bolt[]

Handy began looking after the twins as a favour to Clumsy, originally thinking it would be a one off. When he found that looking after them distracted him from his depressive thoughts for a while, and that the twins liked his company, he began to look after them regularly. He started seeing them as part of him even before he realised he was now in love with their father, and has always considered both of them just as much a son as he ever had. Handy is one of the few Smurfs the boys will genuinely listen to, and he does his best to keep them safe.

Mari Smurf[]

Mari is Handy’s biological daughter, and the two are exceptionally close. Handy was a little bit overwhelmed at first, having never raised a Smurfling from so young, but he soon came to find that he enjoyed this aspect of it, and would gladly take over duties. He does try and keep Mari out of the workshop if he’s working on particularly dangerous inventions, but will often take her with him if he’s just sketching out projects or mending something simple. He can, at times, be a slightly protective father, but isn’t without reason.

Misc Relationships[]

  • Handy and Architect dated as teenagers for a short while, but it mutually fizzled out. They remain good friends regardless, and often help each other with projects still.
  • Handy and Smurfette are good friends, and Handy was one of the first male Smurfs who’s relinquished his crush on her.
  • Handy tolerates Brainy on account of him at least being a fellow Smurf, as well as being Clumsy’s best friend. In general, they have somewhat of a frenemy relationship.
  • Handy is friends with SmurfStorm, admiring her fellow ability for building inventions, and the two have bonded over being somewhat connected, as Handy is technically the step-father to her kids. He is, at times, somewhat afraid of her though.
  • Handy currently has an apprentice of sorts in Diligent Smurf, who often helps him when the village workload is too high or a job requires two sets of hard working hands to complete.
  • Handy is a good friend of SmurfGadget's and the two often have invention competitions.

Trivia[]

  • Handy is still fascinated by mermaids as a general appreciation, but others are careful when bringing up the topic

  • Handy has a habit of chewing the end of his pencil when he’s concentrating
  • The family owns a 'Golden Rhino Beetle', which was named Bakari after Handy's friend from his time-trip
