Harmony Smurf is the village's wannabe musician in the Butterverse

History[]

A descendant of some of the most prestigious Smurfs of all time, Harmony does not quite live up to the reputation his ancestors created. Rather, Harmony’s musical ability is shocking..ly bad. So much so that it’s been known to cause rainfall, shatter glass, and even awaken Smurfs from a death-like curse. In some ways, this could be considered his own kind of magic, albeit to the detriment of those around him.

Personality[]

Harmony is optimistic about his outlook on life, despite the misery he causes to those around him whenever he plays any instrument (or sings). He can never resist an opportunity to pull out his favourite trumpet and play, and can often become upset or offended when his music is met with groans and curses. Out of the village, Harmony is one of the more sensitive Smurfs, and tends to take things personally more often than not.

He seems to be under some delusion that the others see him as  a great musician, occasionally claiming to be working on ‘masterpieces’ or needing time to compose great symphonies.

Appearance[]

Harmony is a male Smurf of slightly above average height. He’s not muscular, but does have quite a broad chest, showing the capacity of his large lungs. In both ears, Harmony has a musical note shaped earring.

He can often be seen carrying his trumpet.

Role In Village[]

Harmony is the village town crier, alerting Smurfs of important meetings, or being an early audio warning. Really, he wants to be the village’s best musician and play with the bands, but this is unlikely to happen any time soon.

Relationships[]

Smooth Smurf[]

Smooth is Harmony’s cousin, and the two are constantly at odds. Smooth is much more talented musician, a great flirt, and a pain in the neck. Harmony hates all comparison between them and the fact Smooth will always try and muscle in Harmony’s romantic interests – in the past, with success. Harmony often feels belittled and patronised by his cousin, and although like all Smurfs he does wish any actual harm on him, Harmony is determined to one day get the better of him and be the ‘best’ at something for once.

SmurfMelody[]

Harmony and Melody briefly dated sometime after the two villages met up, having met her at a party as part of the band and spending the night jamming out. They continued a short but sweet relationship, until Melody figured out Harmony’s name was ‘ironic’ and left him for being incompatible with her musical tastes. Harmony was hurt by this for a while, but ultimately ends up feeling fairly neutral about the whole thing.

Jokey Smurf[]

Harmony had always been Jokey’s friend, or occasionally an unwitting pawn in musical themed pranks, but it wasn’t until Harmony exchanged his ability to hear for great musical prowess that their relationship began to develop into something deeper. Harmony finds out that Jokey travelled to the storm island lagoon to confront Cadence, where he asks to be given back his old musical ability, thinking that Cadence would hand Jokey back over. Instead, she gives Harmony his hearing and old music back, but attempts to take Jokey as compensation, being foiled when Harmony’s music shatters the glass box underwater and allowing them to swim to freedom. On shore, Jokey briefly kisses Harmony before the two return to the village, although the two feel too awkward to explore any further.

Sometime later, Jokey’s mess up at the hands of a powerful love bomb potion infects the village and causes a temporary infatuation between Harmony and Vanity Smurf. The events of this cause Jokey to realise his feelings, and after curing the village, Jokey confesses his feelings, which Harmony reciprocates.

The two have a slightly up and down relationship at times, and are often the most prone to arguments out of the Smurf couples, but there’s no denying they love each other, and working through everything together is a testament to it.

Crescendo Smurf[]

Having almost lost Crescendo to the demon Mercator during a forgotten contract battle, Harmony has dedicated his life to being a much better father to make up for that fact. Crescendo is generally a better musician than his father, something Harmony is both proud of and puzzled by the fact the others seem to genuinely enjoy Crescendo’s music much more than his own. Harmony is less keen on his son’s pranks, but does have to admit that they’re the least harmful of the family’s.

Surprise Smurf[]

Harmony loves his daughter, although he has to admit he slightly fears her too, or more specifically the consequences of the shenanigans she gets up to. Harmony has tried to speak with her about some of the more dangerous / morbid pranks, to limited success. Nothing would ever stop him loving her of course, and as far as parent-child bonds go they’re great, but Harmony can’t help but prefer the moments when she’s too tired but do anything but curl up in his arms, as oppose to running around after her, apologising to the village in her wake.

Mercator Demon[]

Mercator was a demon Harmony met and signed a contract with as a teenager. In exchange for a golden trumpet, Harmony agreed to give away his first born child to Mercator. Years later, upon Crescendo’s delivery, Mercator reappears in an attempt to claim the baby, only to be fought in court by Brainy Smurf, who won the case by pointing out the fact that Smurflings are delivered via stork, not born in the traditional way, and therefore Crescendo was not a first born child.

Despite this rather terrifying first encounter, Harmony and Mercator actually end up on decent terms. The demon serves his own purpose far more than being truly evil, and not wanting to waste his opportunity for more contracts, ends up sticking around from time to time, eventually forming something akin to a friendship with the family, so he and Harmony are more like vitriolic best buds these days.

Cadence Siren[]

Cadence was a siren Harmony once traded in his ability to hear for the ability to create beautiful music. A force of chaotic neutral, Cadence ended up exchanging Harmony’s old music back for the exchange of Jokey Smurf – something Harmony put an end to when his trumpet broke through the glass underwater and freed him.

Trivia[]

  • Harmony seems to suffer with amusia (tone deafness) as he’s completely unable to distinguish good from bad music.
  • A running gag in the Butterverse features Harmony having an addiction to ‘signing contracts’ in a self-explanatory series of him continuously being unable to resist making deals.
  • Due to the constant contract signing, Harmony’s soul is technically owned by Jokey. This doesn’t mean Jokey can do much other than tease him but means Harmony can’t barter it away to any demons.
  • Harmony runs a demon-daycare as a replacement for his soul selling services. Really, he’s become quite matey with them.
  • Harmony occasionally does drag.
