Jokey is a Smurf character than is a protagonist of the Butterverse
History[]
Jokey Smurf is the village prankster and comedian, forever coming up with new ways to mess with his friends or new people, but more often that not simply reverting back to his tried and tested method of giving people his famous yellow and red boxes – with explosive results.
Personality[]
Jokey is almost always cheerful, for even when he’s down it’s never for long. Jokey loves to cheer others up alongside him, although his methods are unconventional at best, and often explosive in the literal sense. He does manage to bring a smile to those around him with his stand-up routines and verbal jokes, although physical pranks and gift boxes are his favourites.
Jokey can be reckless at times, and perhaps even foolish, but through and through he’s a loyal friend and good hearted Smurf. Deep down he often feels lonely, so it’s possible his optimistic persona is hiding some deeper feelings, but he’s loathe to discuss these with anyone, even his closest friends.
Appearance[]
Jokey is a male Smurf of slightly shorter than average height, and on the skinny side. He has freckles on both cheeks, and can usually be seen carrying a yellow and red present box.
Role In Village[]
Jokey is the village’s nuisance comedian. He works odd jobs when required to, but spends most of his day working out how to trick Smurfs into opening his gift boxes, or writing down a new comedy routine.
Relationships[]
Vanity Smurf[]
Vanity is Jokey’s unlikely best friend. Although Vanity finds him generally uncouth and irritating at times, the two are never the less seen together frequently, and have formed an unlikely bond of trying to break Brainy’s self-imposed rules on the village. Jokey will often run his comedy routines by Vanity first, or show off his latest prank ideas, although his friendship does not mean that Vanity is completely safe from being a target of his pranks either.
Harmony Smurf[]
Jokey cares a lot for Harmony, although he struggles to communicate at the beginning of their relationship. Jokey likes to be seen as carefree and relaxed, something that contradicts a serious relationship with Harmony.
It’s not until after an encounter where he attempts to retrieve Harmony’s old music back from Cadence the siren that Jokey beings to realise the full extent of his feelings, and not until another adventure with Smooth following a failed love bomb prank that he acts upon them. Harmony still isn’t safe from Jokey’s pranks despite their relationship, but Jokey is generally a bit more lenient, even giving romantic surprises alongside his regular pranks.
Deep down, Jokey likes Harmony because he makes him laugh, something that’s very important to the prankster, and whilst he’s not exactly in the dark about Harmony’s terrible music, finds he doesn’t exactly mind it as much as most Smurfs do either.
Crescendo Smurf[]
Jokey is a constant source of inspiration and ideas for Crescendo, and often his partner in crime and get-out-jail-free card. The father-son duo can often be found as each other’s alibi during two-man pranks, although Crescendo’s pranks tend to be less harmful than his father’s.
Jokey struggled with insecurity relating to fatherhood before Crescendo was delivered, having been told by other Smurfs that he was too immature to live up to the challenge, but Jokey has proved himself to be quite the opposite. He also admires Crescendo’s musical ability, but secretly wonders just where he inherited from since it certainly wasn’t Harmony.
Surprise Smurf[]
Few, if any Smurfs, can level Jokey’s sheer insanity, let alone surpass it, and yet that’s practically what his daughter does. Jokey admires Surprise’s shenanigans up to a point, but having had her later in life he also acknowledges he has to be slightly more mature about the diplomacy of handling it. Surprise does look up to her dad, and Jokey sometimes lets her wind herself away around his little finger, but he’s a bit more careful to keep his eye on her than he was with her older brother.
Smooth Smurf[]
Although Jokey generally gets along with everyone, he cannot stand Harmony’s egotistical cousin Smooth. Smooth has made it his life’s goal to flirt with Jokey, something he does relentlessly and which Jokey doesn’t appreciate nor reciprocate. He doesn’t wish any harm on Smooth, and knows Smooth would likely not cause harm to him either, but Jokey still crosses the street if he sees him coming, or finds ways to get out of conversations with him as quickly as possible.
Mercator Demon[]
Jokey still holds a bit of a grudge against Mercator following the almost-stealing of his son Crescendo, but as Mercator has become almost a friend of the family now Jokey can’t help but be fascinated by his magic either.
Cadence Siren[]
Jokey had a brief encounter with Cadence when he attempted to retrieve Harmony’s old music back for him, but it ultimately ended up in him almost being trapped with her forever.
Trivia[]
- Jokey's shadow is still sentient from the incident where it became alive, although still attached to Jokey after being sewn on by Tailor. His shadow sometimes acts of it's own accord.
- Although not present in his Smurf drawings, Jokey is known to have heterochromia, with his left iris being green and his right being blue; this is mostly seen in humanisations
- Jokey’s favourite prank victims tend to be Brainy and Grouchy, since both react poorly, which Jokey finds the funniest
- Jokey seems to have some sort of innate magic, relating to hammerspace as his gift boxes occasionally appear out of thin air. It’s not really explained.
- Jokey's cheery persona may be a cover for a deep feeling of loneliness that he only expresses when made to feel sad with magic. Jokey has a hard time opening up to people, even his closest friends.
