Nova Sweef is a character that is part of the next generation of the Butterverse.

History[]

Nova was the child of Juno and Marz Sweef, who unfortunately both died during a space ship crash on their home planet. Nova survived in the backseat but lost their right horn, leading to difficulties using their powers in later life.

Nova’s uncle Britt was called to the scene of the accident as next of kin, but due to the nature of his nomadic lifestyle, thought it best to leave his nibling with a stable home. Britt took Nova to Earth to ask two of his closest friends if they’d be willing to take the Sweef in, and so Nova’s new life in Smurf Village began.

Personality[]

Nova is a curious and energetic Sweef with a passion for studying history and fossils. One of their Sweef powers enables them to sense objects buried underground, although due to their broken horn it’s not always precise. This is how they end up discovering fossils, something they now share a passion for with Palaeontologist Smurf, who frequently employs Nova’s otherworldly skills.

Nova often appears to enjoy mischief, particularly when adhering to ‘alien tropes’ they’ve learnt about on Earth, which in general means leaving crop circles in Farmer’s fields to his dismay. Their humour also extends into sarcasm and mimicry of others, made better by the fact they can semi-shapeshift into the appearances of others for full effect.

Appearance[]

Nova is a purple Sweef with a lilac muzzle and a blue crest with inverted curves. They have four horns, two smaller front horns and two larger at the back. The larger horn on the right side is broken at the base, and often spews Sweef magic randomly. The left horn is intact and curves up and inwards. Between the horn is a blue power source.

They have separated, almond shaped eyes which are almost completely black except for two blue lights and pointed instead of rounded ears (during shapeshifting, these features remain on the transformation due to Nova being unable to fully shapeshift due to the broken horn)

As a Sweef, Nova’s forearms are larger than their upper arms, and they are usually barefoot. They wear a black sleeveless cropped top with a ringed planet on it, and wide black shorts with silver glitter resembling stars.

As an adult, Nova develops a black prosthetic horn for their broken one, to counterbalance the weight of their head.

Role In The Village[]

Despite their age, Nova is useful for a fair number of jobs around the village due to having some control over powers that Smurfs do not. Their broken horn does limit their abilities however, and using them for long periods of time can be exhausting. They mostly aid Tracker Smurf during truffle season and quite often Archaeologist and Palaeologist during excavations.

When not using their Sweef abilities, Nova can be found playing with the other village children.

Relationships[]

Juno and Marz Sweef[]

Juno and Marz were Nova’s biological parents, however they died whilst Nova was still a baby. As such, Nova has no actual recollection of them, but still hears stories of them from their uncle and knows their parents loved them very much.

Britt Sweef[]

Britt Sweef is Nova’s maternal uncle. The two have an exceptionally good bond and although Britt’s adventuring means he’s not around all the time, he makes a lot of effort for his nibling and was the one who knew they’d be safe on Earth. When Britt does visit, he often tells stories about Nova’s parents, or allows Nova to come on day trips into outer space. Otherwise, Nova is keen to teach their uncle about life and traditions on Earth, at least anything Britt hasn’t learnt from Dreamy.

It is also due to Britt that Nova learns more about Sweefs in general, as well as the home planet they’d have otherwise grown up on.

Dreamy and Tracker Smurf[]

Nova was left in the care of Dreamy and Tracker Smurf and has come to fully see them as their parents, if not by blood. Nova is close to and adores both, and appreciates the patience they must have had to raise a child with abilities and needs they weren’t used to. Nova’s location ability also helps Tracker out during truffle season, whilst their abilities and curiosity match Dreamy’s fascination with life perfectly. Overall Nova truly sees them as their dad’s and addresses them as such, and Dreamy was the first person Nova spoke to regarding their gender confusion.

Rover Smurf[]

As Dreamy and Tracker’s older, biological kid, Nova has come to view Rover as their older brother. It took some getting used to at first on Rover’s end, as he was still quite protective of Tracker and Nova was a baby who didn’t know any better, but as the years have gone on the two have become very close and Rover is one of the first Smurfs Nova turns to for advice or protection. Rover has tried to teach them whittling skills, to little success. Still, he encourages Nova wherever possible

Archaeologist and Palaeontologist Smurf[]

The historian brothers are another pair particularly fascinated by Nova’s location ability. ‘Pal’ had already been researching fossils a while before Nova was able to uncover any, but finding them without any rhyme or reason was hard. Nova proved to be just what they both needed to uncover more fossils and artefacts and they’re both very enthusiastic about the Sweef’s help … even if they often uncover random junk instead.

Nova finds the pair amusing but insufferable in their constant arguments.

Sower Smurf[]

Sower Smurf and Nova have something of a rivalry, at least as kids. Due to Sower being Farmer’s daughter and Nova’s habit of making crop circles and pretending to beam up snails, Nova finds it particularly fun to wind her up. This is all done in good spirit from Nova’s end, and they mean no actual harm, and when not playing pranks on the farm the two get along very well.

In adult years, Nova and Sower develop a romantic relationship.

Crash and Bolt Smurf[]

The twins find Nova to be one of their most awesome friends, due to their species and abilities. Nova gets on well with them both, enjoying and often improving on whatever mischief or antics they have going on. In child years, Nova may or may not be aware of Bolt’s crush on them, but seems to not reciprocate, although still considers both of the twins among their better friends.

Trivia[]

  • Nova uses they/them pronouns and their biological sex is unknown from an out-of-universe perspective and the author deliberately wants it to remain unknown. In-universe, the other characters do know as Nova would have been raised as such until coming out.
  • Nova’s favourite dinosaur is the triceratops, due to the similarities in having horns and a crest.
  • Nova wasn’t originally intended to exist in the Butterverse, instead, they came about as an accident due to a certain sims 4 event and were later adapted into the universe via a more appropriate backstory.
  • Nova was originally not related to Britt and was originally simply abandoned on Sweifxam but the author felt this too loose of a backstory and so gave them a relation to Britt, who pre-dated them as a character.
  • Their broken horn makes these abilities incomplete however they still have some control over powers that others of their species have, including teleportation, telekinesis, transformation, and location ability. They can’t teleport too far from where they started, their telekinesis only works in short bursts, their transformations are easy to see through due to their eyes/ears remaining the same and their locating isn’t precise. Still, it’s more powers than any Smurfs have so it counts for something.
  • They have a ‘Smurf disguise’ that they use occasionally. It’s also pretty easy to see through but they modelled it off of Tracker and Dreamy in order to look more like them when in this disguise.
