Painter Smurf is a Smurf character, and a protagonist of the Butterverse.
History[]
Painter Smurf is one of the residents of Smurf village, living under the current Papa Smurf’s era. He is the resident artist, and is known to have come from a long line of artists before himself, so it is considered a family trait.
Personality[]
Painter is an overdramatic and somewhat temperamental individual. He doesn’t take to negative criticism very well, but has no issues dishing it out himself. He can often become somewhat upset when things don’t go his way, and has been known to even become violent when he or his work have been insulted (usually throwing paints or smashing canvases). Although this can make him a somewhat difficult Smurf at times, he’s also genuinely passionate about his work and often generous to his other Smurfs. He considers himself a romantic, and likes to demonstrate this through his work or gifts to his muses, usually in the form of flattering portraits.
Appearance[]
Painter is a Smurf of average height and physique. Unlike other Smurf’s whose hats are generally upright, Painter’s sweeps to the side in a style reminiscent of a beret, although is still white, like his standard Smurf leggings. He wears an open red jacket that reaches his sleeves, and a black bowtie with long ends. He is most often seen with a paintbrush and pallet in hand or nearby. Painter speaks in a French accent.
Role In The Village[]
Painter is known for his fervent love of art. In particular, this is mostly traditional paints on canvas, although he has been known to also experiment with sculpture and make up on occasion. He tends to create these as a hobby, and will often decorate other Smurfs houses or take commissioned portraits from them (mostly Vanity Smurf). He is also sometimes part of interior decoration consultants for new houses or ones being modified, looking at colour schemes in particular.
Relationships[]
Smurfette[]
Smurfette was the apple of Painter’s affections before her relationship with Hefty Smurf became apparent. Nevertheless, he still regards her as a close friend and good muse for his portraits, particularly when he needs female models as he knows she’s willing to stand still long enough.
Vanity Smurf[]
Vanity Smurf is both Painter’s best customer and the bane of his life. Painter is often overworked by Vanity’s needs for more portraits than he can manage, and sometimes wants to paint a different muse at times. This can lead to arguments and disagreements between them. When they’re not engaged in Vanity’s 1845238th portrait, the two will still sometimes hang out together regardless, so the two would still consider themselves good friends.
Poet Smurf[]
Poet Smurf is one of Painter’s closest friends, and later husband. The two have been rocky friends since Smurflinghood, as art and writing often go hand in hand and the two feel as though they can depend on each other to understand their creative processes’ when no-one else will. This isn’t to say the two don’t have their own arguments, sometimes between which creative media is better, although they often find compromise and have grown closer since the two ran away together to Storm Island.
The two grew closer still when tasked by Papa to create a new fairytale book for The Festival Of New Beginnings Celebrations. Originally, the two bickered over their creative differences for the book – Painter wanted a very visual fairytale with lots of illustration to accompany the words, whilst Poet wanted a very metaphorical story with abstract images. When the two were unable to cooperate, Papa Smurf sent them in Gutsy Smurf’s place to retrieve the rainbow crystal from the crystal empire instead. Upon attempting to return via river, a collision between a log and rock broke a large chip of the crystal, causing them to fight. This was broken by the sound of a songbird, which gave the two inspiration to fix the crystal and create a poem for the festival, restoring the celebrations as normal and causing the two to see each other in a new light.
Although Poet can sometimes become frustrated with Painter’s shenanigans, it’s clear the two value each other deeply.
Visionary Smurf[]
Visionary is Painter’s oldest son, and every inch as creative as his father, if not more obsessive. Painter was ecstatic to see that his son had ‘zhe artistic vision’ when Visionary was a Smurfling, although it somewhat became out of hand in later years when Visionary grew even more keen to produce more and more masterpieces. The two share rather similar personalities, although Visionary is often less offended by critique and doesn’t have quite a short a temper as Painter does. The two get along very well and will often work together on artistic projects or painting, often sharing artistic visions and sharing new techniques.
Patisserie Smurf[]
Although Painter is slightly confused about his younger son’s fascination with baking instead of literal art or writing, he acknowledges this is still art in its own way and is pleased that Patisserie excels at French style pastries regardless. The two perhaps aren’t as close as Painter and Visionary since their personalities and hobbies differ, but they do still share a strong father-son bond and Painter is keen to keep his youngest out of harm’s way, ‘harm’ in particular being Painter’s consideration of Luddite Smurf.
Other[]
Don Smurfo[]
Don Smurfo is Painter’s best platonic friend and his regular drinking buddy. Painter is keen to paint portraits of him, which can sometimes be embarrassing or nonsensical if the two have had a little too much, and this is often reprimanded by Poet. Still, Painter has toned down this habit since parenthood began, and the two instead seem to prefer food tasting sessions with maybe a single glass, although friendly rivalry between their country’s food and drink is the new competition for them.
Luddite Smurf[]
Luddite Smurf is not a Smurf that Painter trusts. It probably has something to do with his father Passive-Aggressive Smurf, who is well known for being even more disliked than Brainy Smurf on occasion, but Painter is particularly hostile ever since he’s suspected something between Luddite and his youngest son. Although he isn’t outright aggressive with Luddite, he’s never been particularly friendly with the teenager either, and can be quite cutting at times if he has to interact with him.
Spectra[]
Spectra is Painter’s colour sprite friend, and although the two don’t meet often they are happy to discuss new colours and art, so Painter is always in awe of her work and keen to show off how he captures them in his own pieces.
