Papa is Smurf Character and the leader of the village in the Butterverse.
History[]
Papa was one of the youngest of the previous generation, being only a young Smurfling when Grandpa and Nanny (formerly Papa and Mama) Smurf set out on their quest to seek the elements for the long life stone.
During their absence, the previous leaders engaged in a massive quarrel – a quarrel of such proportion that the village came into a civil war and the Great Grandpa and Grandma Smurf tore the very natures of Smurfs into a new era – a segregation of gender. A large group of female Smurfs headed to the forbidden forest to begin their own settlement, whilst Papa and the males (and some wives) stayed behind.
During this time, however, an unknown virus had begun to spread through the village. In a desperate effort to save their youngest member, Great Grandpa Smurf left the young Smurfling on the doorstep of a great human Wizard known as Paladore … and Papa never saw his generation again.
Years later, Papa returns to the empty village as a young man to see what had become of it, and perhaps for some sense of nostalgia. However after staying in the village for some time – he was most surprised when on the night of the full moon, a stork brought down an unexpected delivery – the first of a new all-male generation.
Personality[]
Papa is usually a kind and friendly man but he can be hot headed and stubborn at times. He’s incredibly intelligent and wise individual with over five centuries of experience in culture, language and his best subject – magic.
Papa has a bit of a competitive streak in him and dislikes his authority being challenged, which at times can hurt his relationships with the villagers. Truly, although Papa has done his best to single handily take care of the village, he is not immune to making poor judgement or mistakes at times.
Appearance[]
Papa is an elderly male Smurf with a bushy white beard. He has some wrinkles from age and wears a red cap and tights.
Role In Village[]
Papa Smurf is the head leader of the village, acting as the mayor and patriarch. Although he gives fatherly advice at times he is not looked to as a father figure as such, despite having raised almost 100 Smurflings singlehandedly due to his generation being almost completely wiped out.
Papa is often found working in his lab on experiments.
Relationships[]
Paladore[]
Paladore was a human wizard that raised Papa Smurf over 500 years ago, and taught him much about magic. This is, at least in part, why Papa Smurf is such a powerful wizard himself.
Paladore’s spirit is trapped within a great boulder, possibly as an ending from a battle with a druid. Papa Smurf can still sometimes communicate with him, but only briefly at dawn. Papa holds his old mentor and father figure in high respect.
Homnibus[]
Homnibus is Papa’s best friend, and a human wizard. The two enjoy engaging in chess battles and trading spells. Homnibus is also the person that tried to give Puppy (known as Homni-one) to Papa as a gift.
Brainy Smurf[]
Brainy is Papa’s self-appointed apprentice and as much as Papa loves all of the villagers, he can often become annoyed with Brainy’s egotistical antics and tendency to break rules despite Brainy’s love for them. Papa knows that Brainy looks up to him as wise leader but tries to treat all of the villager’s equally, although he’s not against giving Brainy punishments for his power trips. Despite Papa’s tendency to be annoyed with him, he would be genuinely devastated if anything happened and even entrusted Brainy to help train Sorcerer.
Sorcerer Smurf[]
Sorcerer Smurf started out as a bit of a mystery to Papa Smurf because he’s so far been unable to trace Sorcerer’s linage. Papa doesn’t care much though, and loved having a new baby around the village now there were over a hundred Smurfs to help him. Papa knows Sorcerer will grow up to be the next leader of the village, a task he is eager to prepare him for – but Papa knows Sorcerer’s magic is unstable and very powerful, so he won’t allow this till he feels Sorcerer is completely ready.
Grandpa Smurf[]
Grandpa Smurf and Papa are much closer now than ever, since Grandpa left when Papa was only a little Smurfling and he doesn’t remember much of him from back then. Nowadays the two are extremely close and act like father and son. Papa will be incredibly heartbroken on Grandpa’s passing.
Gargamel[]
Gargamel is Papa’s biggest enemy, but Papa still holds a certain amount of respect for him. Even in spite of all the terrible things Gargamel has done to them (or threatened to do to them) Papa still believes there is some good in him, and if the Smurfs play tricks on him Papa will always be the bigger man and attempt to correct them – even if it means saving Gargamel’s life.
SmurfWillow[]
Papa was originally put off by SmurfWillow due to seeing himself as the ‘one true leader of the Smurfs’ but he admired her impressive self-taught warrior skills. Once the village and grove combined, the two became firm friends with a light-hearted rivalry over Alchemy vs Natural magic. Eventually, their friendship blossomed into love and the two were married (this was not an effort on Dreamy’s part this time)
It’s likely that Papa and Willow were in the village together as smurflings, but they don’t remember back then.
Smurfette[]
Whilst Papa initially also held some … less than fatherly feelings towards Smurfette at first, his attitude changed fairly quickly as he came to see her as someone to take under his wing. Papa is one of her biggest supporters and deeply regrets that time, viewing himself as far more of a father figure to Smurfette than to any of the Smurfs he helped raised, even, due to Smurfette coming into the world a fully functioning adult and navigating the difficulties of not wanting to end up like her evil creator.
The Rest Of The Village[]
Papa acts as a mayor figure to the majority of the village, giving advice and guidance and in return they all respect him. He’s particularly close to the younger Smurflings, who he feels he’s not too old to have fun with and likes to read stories too.
