"It's always pleasant to witness my dear little smurfs getting along with each other. And as a Papa Smurf myself, it's my duty to protect them as much as you do, my dear little Shinny."

- To Shinny Smurf

Michel Culliford "Papa" Smurf is one of the main characters of MTRoberts124ki's SHINNY: The Crystal Smurf series of fanfiction stories, who is identified as the biological father of Shinny.

Background Information

"Hear me dear friend, for I foresee the future of you becoming a great leader one day. But I must inform you there will always be hurt and pain, and that includes you being forced to give up your only biological son for his own good, whom you'll discover he's something else adding to your kind. But you'll be adopting many afterwards."

- Paladore to young Papa Smurf

100 years prior to the present time established in the novel, Papa Smurf was known as Michel and was married to a female humanoid gem named Rose Quartz, whom had fought against Homeworld for earth and had given up her physical form to bring their son, Shinny Smurf, to life. Ever since then, he had fathered Shinny. The name "Papa Smurf" at the time was simply a common name given by Smurf children to their fathers as "Mama Smurf" was for mothers. He had originally given his son the name of Shinny due to his gemstone shinning bright when it responds to Shinny's emotions.

However, Shinny had managed to gain his mother's gem powers as a young Smurfling, and when he almost killed Jokey out of rage, Michel had no choice but to exile him from the village in order to protect the other Smurfs, and leave him in the care of other humanoid gems known as the Crystal Gems, whom Rose had made friends with on earth; Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. Michel knew that he can't allow Shinny to return until he was fully capable of controlling his powers. Before his departure, Michel accept that it's best to let gems wipe away Shinny's memories of not only knowing how to use his powers but his fellow Smurfs as well, that way Shinny will learn how to control his powers in a correct way, despite how much Michel hates that idea. During the early days of Shinny's exile, he began to suffer depression, regret making his decision, and continuously doubted his fathering skills, feeling that he had broken a promise to Rose of taking care of her son. A very few of his fellow Smurfs noticed his negative moods and wanted to talk to him afterward.

About 50 years later, his fellow Smurfs were dying of an unknown disease for which there was no known cure, but to which he and all the young male Smurfs were immune. Realizing that he now had 98 orphans to take care of by himself, he adopted the young male Smurfs as his "little Smurfs" and also became known as Papa Smurf from that time forward. Over time, the adopted young Smurfs had forgotten about their original parent Smurfs as they had accepted Papa Smurf as being their only parent Smurf. From time to time, he had lost his patience with them, but even with all the trouble they can get into, he continues to love them unconditionally and is proud to watch their growth. He became the leader of the Smurf Village ever since.

Prior to the encounter with the evil wizard, Gargamel, he was trained in everything he knows about magic by the wizard Paladore. This leads him into becoming a master sorcerer who uses his magical abilities to create different kinds of potions to prevent Gargamel and the other villains from bringing harm to him and his little smurfs.

He continued to raise the other Smurflings until 150 years later when they became independent adult Smurfs. One day, one of his little Smurfs was captured by Gargamel, who was planning on creating the Philosopher's Stone that turns base metals into gold, but one of the ingredients needed was a Smurf. When Gargamel captured a Smurf for the formula, he led the others to rescue the kidnapped Smurf and soon they were all captured, bar two. Soon the Smurf he had exiled 150 years ago returned to rescue them.

When Papa Smurf found out that the Smurf who rescued them was actually his son, Shinny, who was now an adult Smurf, he was thrilled to see him again. But still, Shinny didn't remember Papa Smurf was his biological father, therefore Papa Smurf felt like he shouldn't tell Shinny that he was his father until he felt like the time is right, which only helped to acclimate Shinny into being united with his own Smurf brethren and learning how the Smurfs lived. He allows Shinny to give him the permission to visit the Crystal Gems anytime he wants, or for something that's really important.

A few months after the rescue, he meets the first female Smurf, Smurfette, who was originally a grey-skinned harlot with raven black hair created by Gargamel to lure all the Smurfs to him. But he soon performed a magical spell on her when she told the Smurfs who created her. After this, she became the object of love and affection for the entire village.

When Shinny wanted to play smurf-ball with his fellow smurfs, they were unfortunately too busy for him, including Papa Smurf as well. Shinny begins to use his gem powers and his imagination to create himself a drawing of pink, round creature before he begins to cry tears with loneliness, unaware that his tears are magical and can bring any drawing to life. Kirby came to life the following day, much to Shinny's absolute shock, they both were able to get along great. But Kirby started to make a mess around the village, much to the Smurfs' annoyance. Papa Smurf had found out Shinny's powers had brought Kirby to life, and explained to him about that, but unfortunately, Shinny's magic of life would only last for 24 hours, meaning that Kirby will return to a lifeless drawing at sundown, much to Shinny's disappointment.

While the Smurfs went out to pick smurfberries, Gargamel appeared and was able to capture them, but Clumsy and Smurfette managed to escape and ran back to the village to inform Papa Smurf and Shinny. Shinny refused to let Kirby come along, but Kirby decided to rather help them. Once Gargamel was able to capture the remaining Smurfs, Kirby appeared and unleashed his powers to gain abilities from whatever he inhales and defeated Gargamel.

In the end as the Smurfs thanked Kirby for saving them, Papa Smurf decided to give Kirby a chance to live with the Smurfs and become part of their family since Papa Smurf had welcomed Rose to the Smurf family, regardless of their species. He then preformed a true-life spell in order to save Kirby from reverting back into a drawing and forever stay as a real life creature. He and Kirby were able to share a father/son type of relationship.

He then has another daughter, named Peaches, a green, round puffball who was created when Kirby had accidentally used the The Reservation Mirror when he wished himself to have a twin sister so that he won't feel like he's the only puffball creature. Like Smurfette, they share a father/daughter type of relationship.

He then became a grandfather when the baby Smurf, later known as Precious, arrived in the village and warmed the hearts of every Smurf, including Grouchy. And many years later after the Smurfs returned from their time-travel adventure, he again became a grandfather to a baby Smurfette named Amber, the daughter of Shinny and Smurfette.

A year after Shinny was released from the Gem Temple to live in the Smurf Village for good, Papa Smurf allowed the Kyanite, a lone gem who escaped from Homeworld and befriended Shinny during Shinny's exile, to live in the village as well, despite their own personal prejudices regarding gems.

About a few years later when Smurfette was kidnapped by the Naughties; Vexy and Hackus, and was soon brought into Gargamel's clutches, he had originally chosen Brainy, along with Hefty, Tuffy, Gutsy, and Shinny to be part of his specially selected team for the rescue mission, but due to an accident, Clumsy, Vanity, and Grouchy went in the places of Brainy, Hefty, Tuffy, and Gutsy.

A month later, a denominational mirror that is located high above the Smurf Forest where an alternate world exists, has been invaded by the evil shadows. Kirby, Peaches, and the Smurflings were out playing smurf-ball along with Puppy until Dark Meta Knight, an evil version of Meta Knight whom Kirby and Shinny had fought before, encounters them. When Kirby and Peaches try to fight Dark Meta Knight in order to protect the Smurflings, Dark Meta Knight slashed them both into 2 different colored, mini-version copies of themselves each called the pufflings. 2 mini versions of Kirby was a red puffling named Kaby and a white puffling named Keeby, while 2 mini versions of Peaches was a yellow puffling named Piper and a blue puffling named Polly. After Kirby, Peaches were able to save the Mirror World, along with the help of Shinny and the pufflings, Papa Smurf was more than happy to allow them to live in the village.

Papa Smurf lived to the age of 984, when he finally succumbed to the same disease that his fellow Smurfs were inflicted with years ago. His death was foreseen by Shinny years earlier, though even knowing when he was going to die, Papa Smurf chose to let the future unfold instead of doing anything to avert it, believing that it was for the best that he would pass on after his role of being a Papa Smurf was complete.

Personality

The personality of Papa Smurf of these stories is similar to that of the cartoon show universe version of the same character, but he does sometimes have issues with Lazy's constant sleeping, Jokey's surprises, Brainy's endless talking or Clumsy's klutziness, but despite these he does loves his little Smurfs very much to the point of even helping Shinny protect them from beings that intend to cause harm. However, despite that Shinny is reunited with the Smurfs, Papa Smurf still harbors a lifelong regret of ever sending Shinny to the Crystal Gems and leaving him there for 150 years, though he has come to the realization that it has all worked out for the best. Papa Smurf is also welcoming to everyone, even the ones regardless of their species, given example in welcoming Rose Quartz, Kirby, Peaches, the Pufflings, and Kyanite.

As in the cartoon show, he along with the other Smurfs had an amorous interest in Smurfette, which when Shinny found out about it made him feel as if he was competing against his own father for her full affections. However, Smurfette couldn't reciprocate those kind of feelings from Papa Smurf, stating she could only love him as a father and nothing more. After Papa Smurf's brief transformation into a muscular love-crazed grotesquerie who was after Smurfette, when Papa Smurf was restored to normal and Smurfette made her own feelings toward him be known to him, Papa Smurf no longer pursued after Smurfette and treated her like a daughter.

Despite Papa Smurf's loving nature towards his little smurfs, he once shows the opposite towards Tuffy and Weakling once he found out about their same-sex relationship. He demanded Hefty to have them both separated and punished them for good. But Shinny, along with Gutsy and Kirby were able to save them. While Gutsy fights off Hefty, Shinny was able to hide them in Shinny's house where Smurfette, Vexy, Peaches, the Smurflings, and Baby Smurf are before they agreed to help them escape the village, seeing nothing wrong with people who are in the same-sex relationship.

While Shinny and the others summoned Feathers to help Tuffy and Weakling escape to the Gem-Temple, where the Crystal Gems agreed to let Tuffy and Weakling stay with them until things have calmed down in the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf had locked himself inside his house for months while things took a turn for the worse in Smurf Village. When Shinny asked for Papa Smurf to talk, he started to realize how much of a hypocrite he has become and started to regret how he treated Tuffy and Weakling after a heated argument between him and Shinny. Papa Smurf started to remember the time when Rose told him about how she supports the love of people, no matter the race or sex, and how her fellow gems back at Homeworld would hide their forbidden love from the Diamonds since the gems aren't allowed to fuse for love.

In the end he was able to apologize to Tuffy and Weakling, and it did took a while for him to earn forgiveness from them. Ever since then, the Smurfs were able to stop the hate and are allowed to be in a relationship of the same-sex as they want. Shinny later on admits to Papa Smurf that he also has attraction for males as much as he has in females, to which Papa Smurf happily respond that he remembers how Rose would tell him the same thing, and said that he'll love Shinny no matter who he wants to be with. Years later after the "Smurfed In Time" events, Papa Smurf was shows support towards Shinny and Kyanite at their wedding a few years after Smurfette's death.

The reappearance of his father Grandpa Smurf and his mother Nanny Smurf has alleviated some of this loneliness. Despite this, Papa Smurf's fatherly bond to his adopted little Smurfs remains strong.

Papa Smurf's favorite food is chanterelle mushrooms, which only grow in the Smurf Forest once every year around his birthday.

Relationships

  • Shinny He is Papa Smurf's only biological child. During his years as a young Smurfling, Papa Smurf had no choice but to exile him from the village, due to him gaining new powers and almost killing Jokey. The two have a good father/son relationship ever since Shinny's return, but Papa Smurf seems to be trying to make things up to Shinny. This may be because he wasn't there for him when the Crystal Gems raised him and does not consider himself as living up to his potential as a biological parent. In "The Gem I never Smurfed", Shinny and Papa Smurf fuse to make Pearl regain her memories. When they fuse, the process is effortless, signifying the complete trust and understanding between the two. But the following year after the "Smurfed In Time" events, their relationship was affected in "Discovering Papa Smurf" when Shinny found out about Papa Smurf leaving him with the Gems and wiped away his memories.
  • Rose Quartz She was the wife of Papa Smurf before she gave up her physical form to bring Shinny into existence. They met when she was poofed into her gemstone by the centipede monster before the Smurfs found her gemstone and took her to the village until then she reformed. Papa Smurf seems to consider himself very lucky to have met Rose. Papa Smurf still does not know what it was that Rose saw in him. Their relationship was a sincere and loving one, as they decided to bring a child to the world together. For many years Papa Smurf was unaware of the fact that Rose was a persona created by Pink Diamond. Rose stated that he barely knew her is a good thing, implying that she never wanted him to know the truth about her. He was shocked once he figured out at first, but luckily it doesn't change of how he viewed her.
  • Smurf Willow She was his long-lost twin sister who leads a group of Smurfettes in her own village; Smurfy Grove, located in the Forbidden Forest. As a baby Smurf, she, along with the female Smurfs including Nanny Smurf were separated from the male Smurfs long ago in order to protect themselves from a threat that wants to put an end to all smurf kind.
  • Smurfette She is considered his daughter and is treated the same way as one.
  • Kirby He was considered his son, and is treated the same way as one, regardless the difference of their species.
  • Peaches She is considered his daughter and is treated the same way as one, regardless the difference of their species.
  • The Pufflings 4 younger copies of Kirby and Peaches who are considered his children and is treated the same way as one, regardless the difference of their species.
  • "His Little Smurfs" are considered his children and are treated as such.
  • Sassette She is also treated as a daughter.
  • Brainy He is his personal lab assistant who always tries to do his best to help him, even though it gets on his nerves.
  • Baby Smurf He is treated more like a grandson, although Papa Smurf does admit that raising Baby allows him to experience the part of infancy he had missed out on when Shinny was taken to the Gem-Academy.
  • Kyanite He is treated like a son by Papa Smurf, regardless the difference of their species. He also supported him and Shinny during their wedding a few years after Smurfette's death.
  • Sir Johan and Peewit They are also good friends of Papa Smurf. Their first encounter was 4 years before Shinny was reunited with the Smurfs, helping them track down a thief who had stolen their magic flute.
  • Paladore He is his former mentor who communicated with him throughout the years in spirit form, teaching him everything he knew about magic through the use of the Nocturnal Illumine. By the time Papa Smurf successfully defeated the druid leader known as Worluk with the help of his little Smurfs, Paladore saw that his role had ended and thus left Papa Smurf alone.
  • Homnibus He is his friend who teaches Papa Smurf things about humans.
  • Malchior He is usually considered his friend.
  • Selwyn and Tallulah They are also friends of Papa Smurf.
  • King Gerard He is considered a friend of Papa Smurf, whom he hopes would grow wise and strong and benevolent as king.
  • Garnet She is the Crystal Gem who treats Papa Smurf with the most respect. However, due to her enigmatic nature, she rarely shows it openly. She has, however, on several occasions openly voiced her support towards him, often in opposition to Pearl. In "I Smurfed a Fusion", it is Garnet who encourages him not to give up on trying to learn how to perform a fusion dance to fuse with Rose. The episode strongly implies that she did so because she had seen, with her Future Vision, that, while he would never be able to fuse with her, the act of trying would force the two to have a "real talk".
  • Amethyst She and Papa Smurf used to get along very well. Amethyst's immature (by Gem standards) attitude, as well as her love for smurf activities such as eating and slacking off, goes hand-in-hand with his personality. When the Crystal Gems first meet Papa Smurf, young Amethyst is the least reserved and most curious about him and acts like an excited animal around him.
  • Pearl She and Papa Smurf start as rivals for Rose's love, and while it is unclear if Papa Smurf saw it this way, Pearl has this mindset. Pearl, who had always loved Rose, was very antagonistic towards Papa Smurf and openly berates him for his seemingly naïve attempts to romance her. Under the assumption that he is just a "phase" and that Rose will lose interest in him once his novelty as a human wears off, Pearl continues undermining Greg's self-confidence. Years later, the two slowly start getting along well.
  • Flowerbell She is a woodnymph whom Papa Smurf briefly fell in love with until it was revealed she was just luring him to have Lord Balthazar capture him in exchange for her freedom, although her feelings for Papa Smurf are genuine. His second dealing with Flowerbell was met with suspicion and animosity, as she was trying to avoid being married to Avarice, the treasure hunting imp.
  • Grandpa Smurf He is his biological father who gives advice whenever Papa Smurf needs it from an older Smurf with more experience in the world beyond the Smurf Forest.
  • Nanny She is his biological mother who also offers a bit of her advice whenever it is necessary from her unique perspective as an elderly female Smurf.
  • Gargamel He is the enemy of the Smurfs, and thus is also Papa Smurf's personal enemy. Although Papa Smurf does hope for the time Gargamel would change his ways, he isn't above giving the evil wizard what his actions rightfully deserve, and sometimes will go as far as putting Gargamel into great danger as payback.

Role

Papa Smurf normally plays the role of the village leader and father figure to all the other Smurfs. Because he was the only parent Smurf left that was still living at the time the other young Smurfs had lost their parents, he had to rely on the skills of the few proficient Smurfs such as Hefty, Handy, and Greedy to get the other Smurfs to perform vital village tasks that the adult Smurfs were accustomed to doing.

Over time, though, he grew into the role of the village leader and trusted that his little Smurfs would be able to handle things with little supervision and mediation from him, freeing him to be able to continue his studies and experiments. It is only during vital emergencies that Papa Smurf would exert his authority for the greater good of the village.

His role in the Shinny stories was to initially guide his son Shinny into the ways of the Smurf; even though that role was diminished somewhat with Smurfette taking over in teaching things about Smurfs that Papa Smurf himself cannot, he still provides counseling to Shinny in the areas that he knows best. Papa Smurf has given Shinny authority to act as the village leader in times when he himself is unable or unfit to do so.

He was also given the role of minister for Shinny and Smurfette's wedding day.

Abilities

  • Master Sorcerer
  • Master Alchemist
  • Master Wand Duelist
  • Great Knowledge and Wisdom
  • Great Leadership Skills - Mostly acquired through time and experience, both with his fellow Smurfs and then later with his adopted little Smurfs.
  • Omniglot - Papa Smurf is an expert speaker of many different languages, including the lost languages of the Smurfs such as Schtroumpf, which Painter, Writter, and Brainy also know. As he knows that humans and Gems cannot fully understand Smurf language, he speaks to them in pretty much the same language that they generally speak and sometimes acts as an interpreter for whatever a Smurf says to him in Smurf that may contain vital information for his human allies. During Shinny's first visit to the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf tried to be very careful in his use of Smurf language until Shinny was fully able to understand it.

Clothing And Appearance

Papa Smurf wears a red hat and pants in pretty much all the stories that he appears in. The origin of the suit, according to the SHINNY story series, is that it's an artifact of when grown-up male Smurfs would wear different colors to indicate themselves as heads of separate families. With the death of Papa Smurf's fellow Smurfs, the red suit eventually became a symbol of leader status, with the young Smurfs remaining in white (with the exception of Sweepy) until sometime after Shinny's 160th birthday. A white shirt is added to his wardrobe about 10 years after Shinny's final return from the Gem Temple. At Shinny and Smurfette's wedding, Papa Smurf wore a white minister's gown with a red shawl draped around his neck.

Also in most of his appearances, Papa Smurf has a white beard and mustache, except in flashbacks and in particular scenes involving the Imaginarium, where he would appear with a brown beard and mustache. Around the time of Shinny's wedding, Papa Smurf has a small, white goatee by the chin patch. Like most Smurfs, Papa Smurf hardly has any thick visible body hair except for the time when he was transformed into a love-crazed grotesquerie of himself through the use of "pheromone cologne" mixed with other chemicals, which disappeared when he was restored to normal.

His physique as a Smurf in considered within the normal range of his species, though he is described as being slightly paunchy; this may be due to his advancing age. Besides his age, his weight is one of the things about himself that Papa Smurf is not comfortable having his little Smurfs or anyone else make a jest or a comment about.

Alternate Identities

Papa Smurf had assumed some alternate identities, such as:

  • Sorcerer Smurf, when he and his little Smurfs were deceived by Gargamel who originally was posing as Sorcerer Smurf.
  • Grandpa Swoof, when he and his little Smurfs made it appear as though Dreamy had traveled to another world.
  • A nameless ordinary Smurf during a costume party where every male Smurf inexplicably dressed up as Papa Smurf.

Possible Voice Actor

Papa Smurf would probably be voiced by Mandy Patinkin, who voiced the character in the 2017 movie Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Trivia

  • His official birth names of Michel and Culliford are MTRoberts124ki's tributes to the late Michel Elias, who voiced the character in the 1976 The Smurfs and the Magic Flute movie as to the original characters creator, Pierre Culliford (AKA "Peyo").
  • As it was revealed in the Season 9 cartoon show episode "The Smurfs of the Round Table", he is a big admirer of the legendary wizard, Merlin.
  • The prophetic name Michel is Hebrew for "Who is like God".
  • The literal translation of Papa Smurf's original French name Grand Schtroumpf, "Great Smurf", was used by Shinny in a derogatory sense in the Shinny: The Crystal Smurf novel when he wrote Papa Smurf a letter that he was going to shatter his gemstone as an act of suicide.
  • In a French adaption of the SHINNY story series, Papa Smurf would be referred to mostly as Grand Schtroumpf, with Pere Schtroumpf being occasionally used by Shinny. Similarly, for a Dutch adaptation, Papa Smurf would be referred to as Grote Smurf most of the time, with Vader Smurf being occasionally used by Shinny.
