Smoking is a recreational activity and a habit that humans engage in. It usually consists of inhaling the fumes of burning tobacco or some other kind of plant or herbs through a cigar, cigarette, pipe, or inhaler. Although smoking is mostly done by adults, children have also engaged in this activity primarily to make themselves feel older despite the health risks it carries, such as lung cancer and heart disease. By and large, smoking does not appear in mainstream Smurfs media stories since they are mostly written and produced for children, but is most likely to be found in fan works of an adult nature. However, a PVC figure of Papa Smurf smoking a pipe has been produced.

Empath: The Luckiest Smurf stories

Smoking is a habit that some if not all Smurfs in the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series engage in, though it is not looked at favorably by a good deal of Smurfs who either consider smoking to be unhealthy or just don't like the taste of smoke. Papa Smurf is perhaps the most adamant opponent of smoking among his little Smurfs in the village, with the smoking pipe that he has being used mostly for blowing soap bubbles instead of its intended purpose. However, despite Papa Smurf's warnings, some Smurfs do engage in private smoking sessions outside of his notice, particularly with smurfnip, which was made illegal in the Smurf Village until the time a new strain was developed that produced the high without the accompanying hallucinations, prompting the creation of a new establishment, The Wake N Bake Brew Shop. Some other Smurfs resort to using lollipops or candy sticks as their substitute.

In the Mirror Universe version of the Smurf Village, however, smoking is prevalent among all its members, including the Smurflings. Empath and Polaris have witnessed that they use rather potent herbs such as smurfnip in their cigarettes.

Hero: The Guardian Smurf stories

Smoking has been a one-time habit among the Smurfs in the HERO: The Guardian Smurf story series when they discovered the joys of inhaling smurfnip.

Glovey Story

In the Glovey Smurf story series musical "Smurfed Lightning" (which is based on the musical Grease), cigarettes have been replaced by candy sticks used by the main characters in the musical, most likely to de-emphasize the presence of smoking in the story series. In "Revelations", Glovey's alternate self Anastesius enjoys smoking cigars.
