Smurfs in the EMPATH: The Luckiest Smurf story series require nutrition three times a day like humans, although at times they can function reasonably well on just one meal a day. With the help of Papa Smurf and the kitchen staff, Greedy tries to keep the meals well-balanced as far as nutritional levels go so that there's no malnourishment problems. However, Smurfs must also be careful about what kinds of food their put into their own bodies as well as how much food they should eat on a daily basis. In the cartoon show episode "Gormandizing Greedy", Greedy and his fellow Smurfs deal with the problem of his being overweight by putting Greedy on a diet-and-exercise regimen.
A Smurf's diet consists of:
- Fruits and vegetables
Smurfs by and large tend to have a vegetarian diet, so most of their food items use a lot of fruits and vegetables. They contain Vitamin A, B6, C, D, Chromium, Choline, Folate, Iron, Molybdenum, Potassium, Riboflavin, Selenium, Sodium, Zinc, Water, Fiber, and Sugar.
- Breads and grains
This is a secondary necessary item for their diet. They contain Vitamin B6, B12, D, E, Biotin, Calcium, Folate, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Molybdenum, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Phosphorus, Thiamin, Carbohydrates, Fiber, and Fat.
- Dairy products
This is the third essential item for their diet. They contain Calcium, Choline, Phosphorus, Carbohydrates, Saturated fatty acids, and Sugar.
- Meat products
This is the least essential item for their diet, although it is possible that a Smurf may be able to eat meat if necessary.
Some particular health concerns include:
- Sugar
While sugar is an essential part of a Smurf's diet, they must be careful not to eat too many sweets and foods that do not have natural sugars in them.
- Fermented drinks
Fermented drinks have alcohol in them which can impair a Smurf's thinking as well as his physical and motor functions if drunken in excess. As a rule, Tapper monitors how much a Smurf has drunk in his tavern and doesn't let them go beyond their physical limit, often relying on Tuffy to deal with unruly customers.
