The Smurfs are the main protagonist species in The Smurfs: Two Sides. They are little magical blue creatures who live in forested areas. There are two main groups of Smurfs- the Smurf Village Smurfs and the Smurfy Grove Smurfs.

Physical Makeup[]

Physically, a Smurf is no more than "three apples tall," and has a pear-shaped body with an oval-shaped head, springy legs, and limber arms, with a short stubby tail sticking out from his or her buttocks. The springy legs allow a Smurf to jump to high places or across rocks and branches rather easily. All Smurfs wear phrygian caps.

The male Smurf is mostly bald and relatively hairless, although it is possible for a male Smurf to grow hair on their head with the usage of magic potions. They do not begin to sprout facial hair until sometime around their 400s. Most male Smurfs only wear tights. A few male Smurfs do wear clothing on their torsos, and no specific reason is given for this, though it simply may be a matter of function and/or comfort for them. In canonical Smurfs media, male Smurfs go shirtless in the winter; but in The Smurfs: Two Sides, they wear jackets in the winter.

The female Smurf has hair on her head. This hair is a dark blue color in her youth, and starts turning white once she is in her late 400s. She wears a dress and shoes, which are usually beige.

Male Smurfs have larger noses and larger feet than female Smurfs.

Smurfs tend to age slower than humans and thus live longer than humans. A Smurf reaching 150 years of age is usually considered an adult, with relative mental maturity of humans somewhere between mid-adolescence and early twenties. It is rare for a Smurf to live to around 1000 years of age, as Grandpa Smurf has done.

General Intelligence[]

The general intelligence of the Smurf race in whole seems to be based on a level of obliviousness. Examples of that can be found in stories like "The Purple Smurfs", where Handy Smurf carries an infected Smurf over his shoulder, leaving himself wide open for that infected Smurf to bite him and infect him as well. Or when the Smurfs have succeeded to capture an infected Smurf and bring him to Papa Smurf's lab, but only Papa Smurf was smart enough to flee the scene when that infected Smurf escapes while all the others just go "He bit me!" and basically let themselves be infected. Another common fault of the Smurfs is that they always fall for Jokey Smurf's joke with the exploding gifts, no matter how many times they received one before. The Smurfs of Smurfy Grove are slightly more intelligent than the Smurfs of Smurf Village, but not by much.

Society, Structure, and Culture[]

Each group of Smurfs is led by a single adult Smurf, who directs the group in daily tasks and serves as a mediator in disputes, using their skills, wisdom, intelligence, and power with benevolence. This leader wears a red cap and red tights or shoes.

The Smurfs' community generally takes the form of a cooperative, sharing and kind environment based on the principle that each Smurf has something he or she is good at, and thus contributes it to Smurf society as he or she can. In return, each Smurf appears to be given their necessities of life, from housing and clothes to food. The Smurfs have very little use for money, though at times they may trade something valuable to outsiders in order to get something they need, as Woolly has done in "Wild And Woolly".

Smurfs communicate in a language that they call Smurf, which is a variation of a human language where the word "smurf" is used to substitute for a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. There are some grammar rules, but it is mostly intuitive.

Wild Smurf is a Smurf who is not a part of either Smurf Village or Smurfy Grove, as he lives in Smurf Forest.

Smurf Village[]

In Smurf Village, each Smurf is given a name that's usually based on a talent, an occupation, or a dominant personality trait exhibited by that Smurf; the name can define that Smurf's particular role in their society, though at times a Smurf may seek to expand his range of talents and abilities or to outgrow certain traits they are named after (Unnamed Smurfs are simply called Smurf, until they earn their own names).

In Smurf Village, there is one leader, who stays the leader until he either dies or retires. This leader picks his successor while said successor is young, and raises him to become the next leader.

The Smurf Village community at this point consists of 96 young adult Smurfs, Papa Smurf, 4 smurflings, Baby Smurf, Grandpa Smurf, and Nanny Smurf. Some additional residents of their village include pets such as Puppy, Smoogle, Feathers, and Snappy Bug. Most Smurfs living in Smurf Village are men, although there are a handful of women.

Smurfy Grove[]

In Smurfy Grove, every Smurf gets their name at delivery. They are named after aspects of nature; including (but not limited to) flowers, animals, and stones.

Due to the danger of the forest they live in, each and every inhabitant of Smurfy Grove is taught wilderness survival skills and how to fight from a young age. Sports involving teamwork and physical activity are common, and battle drills are occasionally held to make sure everyone is ready in case the Grove is ever attacked. Even the weakest Grove Smurf can wield a weapon and take out their enemies.

Leadership in Smurf Village is a semi-democracy. There is one main leader, but when important decisions have to be made, that leader calls a council. The council gives their opinions, and the leader takes those opinions into account when making the decision.

Smurfs are usually not chosen to be leader until they are already adults, and have demonstrated wisdom, mediating ability, and skill in battle.

The Smurfy Grove community at this point consists of 99 young adult Smurfs, Smurfwillow, and several other Smurfs that are Smurfwillow's age.

Up until a few months before the start of the series, the Smurfs of Smurfy Grove did not know male Smurfs existed, and assumed Smurfs were all female.

Notes[]

  • In both Smurfs: The Lost Village and the 2021 cartoon series, Smurfwillow is the only female Smurf of her age. However, in The Smurfs: Two Sides, there are more female Smurfs that are Smurfwillow's age. This was done because if Smurfwillow was the only female Smurf her age, then the logical explanation would be that two completely separate populations of Smurfs went through the exact same population bottleneck event at the exact same time, which doesn't make any sense.
