Tailor Smurf is a Smurf character, and one of the main protagonists in the Butterverse.
History[]
Tailor Smurf is the village clothes maker. He’s one of the Smurfs brought up in the generation raised by Papa Smurf after a virus wiped out the parent Smurfs. He currently resides in the village.
Religion[]
Tailor is one of the few Smurfs within the Butterverse to be somewhat associated to religion; that is, Tailor is presented as being Jewish, a reference to his accent from the 1980's cartoon by his voice actor Kip King. However, since Smurfs in the Butterverse are mostly secular, or at the very least simply cohabitate with the higher deities without worship, it is unlikely he is religious in a traditional sense, especially when the rest of the village are not. As Smurfs do not practise human values, it is more likely that Tailor himself is associated culturally rather than theistically. Nevertheless, since Tailor has been depicted with menorah before, it does seem that he somewhat overlaps with human culture.
It should also be noted that Tailor does "celebrate" Christmas, as do all the Smurfs, although this celebration for Smurfs is a way to give thanks to the new year and the nature of winter, and is celebrated without a connection to Christian beliefs as such.
Personality[]
Tailor is a kind hearted and generous Smurf with a passion for his craft. However, he can be a little cynical at times, as well as sarcastic. Generally, he prefers to be left alone to do his work in peace, but is not unfriendly towards his fellow Smurfs and is happy to join them in village gatherings. He does somewhat think the other Smurfs are a little crazy at times, as Tailor himself is very down to earth. He’s a bit traditional when it comes to clothing, but has gotten better over time and finds he now enjoys experimenting outside of the box.
Appearance[]
Tailor is the shortest adult of the Smurf village, which can occasionally pose problems for him, especially when he tries to measure taller customers. His weight and physique are average to these proportions, and his skin has no markings. He wears the traditional white leggings and a hat which he sticks spare pins in. He can often be seen with a tape measure draped around his neck, and occasionally a sewing cushion on his right arm.
Role In The Village[]
Tailor is the village fabric worker and the one who sews the clothing for his peers. He’s skilled with a needle and thread and is able to work for long periods of time sewing without needing a break, although does sometimes suffer with sore muscles if he has particularly big projects. Tailor does most of his sewing by hand, but will infrequently use a sewing machine to work with as well. As well as the everyday clothes for the Smurfs, Tailor is often responsible for special occasion costumes or fixing up book covers and Smurfballs where the stitching becomes loose.
Relationships[]
Papa Smurf[]
Tailor respects the village leader and his wisdom, and he’s the first one Tailor will go to with his worries or queries. Tailor will usually allow him to talk, even when Tailor wants to be otherwise left alone.
Smurfette[]
Tailor is one of the few Smurfs that has never had romantic feelings towards Smurfette, and instead has always regarded her platonically. Tailor has always enjoyed her willingness to talk about fashion with him (and unlike Vanity Smurf, not debate him on that) and he would regard her as one of his closest friends for that reason.
Julian The Fairy[]
As a teenager, Tailor dated a self-righteous and stuck up fairy named Julian. The relationship lasted longer than it probably should have, on account of Tailor’s insecurity and lack of life experience. Whilst Julian seemed to enjoy showing off the clothes Tailor could make, there was little other sustenance to his relationship, and Tailor was eventually able to realise his self-worth enough to dump him. For a time after, Tailor had a somewhat pessimistic view of love, believing it was nothing more than giving without fair exchange.
Spinner & Weaver Smurf[]
Tailor is close to his co-workers and cousins Spinner and Weaver, although his relationship is slightly better with Spinner due to the fact he finds Weaver to be scatter-brained and unreliable at times. Tailor and Spinner can often be seen hanging out together as a duo if Spinner isn't with his brother, although Tailor doesn't always appreciate Spinner's sense of humour, even if he knows he means no harm. Overall, a fairly typical but healthy familial relationship with both.
Farmer Smurf[]
Although he always respected Farmer’s work at feeding the village, Tailor was slightly irritated by the field hand at first. Part of this was due to Farmer’s tendency to accidentally bring mud into Tailor’s tidy shop when he’d had a day on the fields, or the fact that Farmer is the tallest Smurf, meaning Tailor knew he always had extra work lined up for him. Tailor was once alerted to a knocking on his door during a stormy night, with a panicked Farmer begging for blankets to help warm a newly hatched snail. Tailor followed him and witnessed the new life, and saw Farmer in a new light. Farmer offered to make up for the inconvenience by taking him on a picnic, and Tailor accepted, feeling guilty for his initial thoughts about the farmer, Tailor vowed to get to know him better, and the two quickly became friends. Tailor soon came to discover they actually had very similar work ethics, which he admired a lot.
Over the course of their new found friendship, Tailor and Farmer began to feel a mutual attraction, but both were unsure if they should mention it, despite the rest of the village seemingly being able to tell. Following a disaster party at Princess Periwinkle’s castle, Tailor revealed his feelings with a kiss, and Farmer reciprocated. Farmer restored Tailor’s faith in good relationships, and Tailor was able to soothe some of Farmer’s own insecurities about his social standing. Tailor was proposed to at Farmer’s hut, after one year of the annual Smurf fashion show. He accepted, and was also responsible for their own wedding suits.
Gourdy[]
Tailor and Gourdy have a somewhat strained relationship. Tailor is aware that Farmer and his genie come as a bit of a package deal when entering a romantic relationship with the genie’s master, but they still struggle to get along. Tailor finds him to be in the way far too much, especially when he’d like a bit of peace and quiet, and doesn’t trust Gourdy’s magic around his projects. Never the less, Tailor doesn’t wish any harm on the genie, and finds his antics amusing at times.
Diligent Smurf[]
Diligent Smurf is Tailor’s son, and the two get along very well. Tailor did most of the childcare when Diligent was a baby, due to Farmer being up early in the fields, but occasionally found him difficult to manage physically as Diligent inherited his other parent’s height, making him a rather big baby in comparison to Tailor’s height and strength. As the Smurfling grew older, he became more manageable, albeit sometimes trying to sneak into Tailor’s needle boxes when he wasn’t looking. When he was older still, Diligent began to be able to help his father’s with their daily chores, and Tailor was often grateful for a helping hand he could trust to be a sewing hand second only to his own. Still, he kinda misses the way young Diligent used to bury himself under the silk sheets and pretend to be a caterpillar cocooning himself into a butterfly.
Sower Smurf[]
Sower is Tailor's daughter, and they have a close bond despite the opposing personalities. Tailor is somewhat dissapointed in her lack of interest in sewing, however he understands the importance of letting her discover herself in her own time. When she's not in the fields or getting into mischeif, Sower knows she can always go to Tailor for a cuddle or to have a story read at the end of the day (even if she insists publically that she's too old for such things). Sower does at least appreciate Tailor fixing her ruined items, and probably would be a very good seamstress if she ever found the discipline for it.
Greedy Smurf[]
He has been seen to be good friends with Greedy, although they do tend to banter with each other, usually in a light-hearted manner. Tailor seems to respect Greedy's role in the village, and he tends to be one of the main customers, usually needing extra aprons or re-fitting due to weight changes.
