The Tracing Mirror is a Smurf-sized square handheld mirror that only appears in "Beyond the Mirror's Reflection" in The Smurfs: Light and Dark.
Creation & Usage
It was created by Gargamel as a means of destroying the Smurfs because it was enchanted to turn whomever looked into it to stone. However, when the glass recieved a large crack from a disturbance, its power was weakened - instead of turning living beings to stone, it reveals their most recent past life. It is able to do so by tracing their soul to a previous point in time.
Gargamel left it for the Smurfs to find, and the first Smurf to see an unfamiliar reflection is Clumsy. It does not work for the Smurfettes in the village because, being magically created, their souls are singular and have not yet been directed to a second or third physical form. Being intended for the Smurfs, the aftermath of viewing the reflections differs for other species: when Ripple and Karma see theirs, they have dreams about memories of their past lives. The Smurfs, however, are unaffected after viewing their past life reflections.
Destruction
By the end of the episode, Papa Smurf explains that the only way for Ripple to stop having the memory dreams would be to destroy the mirror. Ripple does so gladly by throwing it against a tree, thus relieving him of his nightly troubles and putting an end to the mirror itself.
Trivia
- This item was inspired by the Bittersweet Cure Mirror introduced to Numbuh 404 by a friend in 2011.
- Originally it was set that when Ripple began to experience the memory dreams he would gradually take the appearance of his past life, but the idea died shortly before the episode was written.
