Vanity is a Smurf character, and a protagonist in the Butterverse.
History[]
Vanity is one of the current members residing in Smurf village, and a prominent figure. He is known for having a living reflection after his silver mirror was struck by a bolt of magic lightning, who he now considers his brother.
Personality[]
Vanity is egotistical and often narcissistic, but not necessarily selfish as some Smurfs such as Brainy can be at times. Vanity’s self-obsession is more in the form of maintaining his beauty and physical shallow appearance, rather than truly believing himself as ‘above’ his fellow Smurfs. He dislikes physical labour or dirty work that will in any way mess up his ‘perfect’ image, although he is still willing to help out the others when they are truly in danger or need him to rescue them.
Appearance[]
Vanity considers himself to be the most handsome Smurf in the village, although this is probably dependant on the Smurf’s personal tastes. His is of average height and has a slightly curvaceous body shape, and flawless skin with slightly rosy cheeks. He wears standard white leggings and a white cap with a flower pinned to it, usually pink or orange but may change with the season or festivity. Vanity can often be seen with his hand held mirror.
Butterverse Vanity speaks with a RP English accent, such as the one portrayed by John Oliver.
Role In The Village[]
Vanity considers himself a beautician of sorts, and is often the one Smurfs to go for cosmetics and other beauty related advice. He can sew, but is generally a better at accessorising than Tailor Smurf, who makes the standard clothes. Vanity is also a fan of creating his own perfumes and colognes as part of his routine, which he sometimes shares as gifts.
Relationships[]
Somebody Smurf[]
Somebody is Vanity’s identical clone, who Vanity was keen to adopt a sibling relationship with when he gained true sentience, despite kicking him out of the house in the first place. Although their relationship was originally rocky since Somebody resented his existence as the ‘other Vanity’ time healed the wounds and he eventually allowed Vanity to form the close relationship the Smurf had always wanted.
Vanity doesn’t truly understand Somebody’s insecurities, and admits he feels Somebody should feel grateful for having been given an already perfect body, as he can’t understand why any Smurf would be insecure about his (Vanity’s) looks. Regardless, he acknowledges that it must be difficult living in his shadow, and has done his best to make Somebody feel more like an individual when he can and tries to avoid comparison.
Grouchy Smurf[]
Vanity found an unexpected friend in Grouchy Smurf when the two were accidentally transported back to the Winslow’s household during Gargamel’s fame in the present day Paris. Several months after returning to their time, Vanity accidentally caused an explosion whilst trying to prepare a new beauty recipe, which left burns on his face that would last for seven weeks. After trying to cover his face from the village, his bandages were torn from him during a game of Smurfball, causing him to flee into the forest, where he was later found and comforted by Grouchy, who surprised him with his empathy.
Following that incident, and having the burns healed by Papa’s magic ointment, Vanity began to see a completely new side to Grouchy that the others had never seen, which eventually wound up with the two of them closer than ever before, despite their striking personality differences. Their relationship sometimes raises an eyebrow from the others, but they seem happy.
Aloof Smurf[]
Aloof is Vanity’s son, and the two share a great deal of traits in common. Aloof tends to come across as haughtier than Vanity, which Vanity simply blames on Grouchy’s side of the family, but the two have a close parent-child bond despite Aloof’s attitude, as Vanity is someone he genuinely trusts. Vanity considers Aloof his fashionable prodigy, and along with Quixotic the three tend to enjoy their family bonding sessions which mostly involve discussing new looks for the upcoming season.
Don Smurfo & Quixotic Smurf[]
As his extended family, Vanity is pretty close to his brother-in-law and niece, and is quite appreciative of their ‘excellent’ tastes in fashion, as he often admired their styles. In particular, he and Quixotic are fond of discussing how best to style outfits.
Jokey Smurf[]
Vanity has an unlikely friendship with Jokey Smurf. Although he finds him frustrating at times, he also finds a little thrill in being a rebel with him, and enjoys smurfboarding with him.
Smurfette[]
Smurfette is possibly Vanity’s best friend, since the two of them have many similar interests and Smurfette enjoys that Vanity tends to be more enthusiastic about exploring fashion than the other guys. Vanity in return is also happy to have a fellow Smurf that enjoys some idle gossip and is always enthusiastic about his latest perfume creations.
Tailor & Painter Smurf[]
These two are Vanity’s closest friends, although generally act as business partners of sorts. Vanity likes to commission paintings from Painter, and new outfits from Tailor, but his constant demand for ‘new’ and ‘more’ can sometimes strain their friendships. With Tailor in particular, Vanity sometimes has a friendly rivalry over creating new fashion styles.
